Poporul evreu era deja în captivitatea babiloniană. Guvernatorul Ghedalia tocmai fusese asasinat de Ismael. Ieremia hotărâse să locuiască în Ierusalim și Iohanan a venit la el cu capeteniile să ceară sfatul lui Dumnezeu (vers. 1-3).

După 10 zile, Ieremia a prorocit din partea lui Dumnezeu pentru rămășița rămasă în țară să nu plece din țară, pentru că Nebucadnețar nu le va face niciun rău (vers. 7-12). Profetul a insistat în fața poporului să nu plece în Egipt, să rămână în țară (vers. 19).

Este greu de înțeles pasiunea evreilor să fugă în Egipt, în timp ce poporul lor a stat acolo 30 de ani. Vom constata cu stupoare în capitolul următor că rămășița de evrei se va duce în Egipt și îl vor lua captiv pe Ieremia. Ieremia se angajase în fața lor că le va spune adevărul așa cum îl va primi de la Dumnezeu: „Prorocul Ieremia le-a zis: „Am auzit! Iată că mă voi ruga Domnului Dumnezeului vostru, după cererea voastră, și vă voi face cunoscut, fără să vă ascund ceva, tot ce vă va răspunde Domnul!” (vers. 4)

De asemenea, rămășița rămasă în țară promite să respecte și să împlinească toate cuvintele lui Dumnezeu. Este greu de crezut cum poporul acesta a trăit într-o totală necredință față de Dumnezeu, deși a trecut prin atâta suferință.

Să ne rugăm pentru ascultarea și supunerea față de voia lui Dumnezeu.

Thursday, March 6, 2025, Jeremiah 42:1-22

The Jewish people were already in Babylonian captivity. Governor Gedaliah had just been assassinated by Ishmael. Jeremiah had decided to stay in Jerusalem, and Johanan came to him with the leaders to seek God’s guidance (verses 1-3).

After 10 days, Jeremiah prophesied on God’s behalf, telling the remnant remaining in the land not to leave, for Nebuchadnezzar would not harm them (verses 7-12). The prophet urged the people not to go to Egypt but to stay in the land (verse 19).

It is difficult to understand the Israelites’ eagerness to flee to Egypt, even though their ancestors had lived there in bondage for 430 years. In the next chapter, we will be astonished to see that the remnant of the Jews would go to Egypt and even take Jeremiah captive. Jeremiah had assured them that he would truthfully relay God’s message: “Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, ‘I have heard you. I will certainly pray to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.’” (verse 4)

The remnant in the land also promised to obey and fulfill all of God’s words. It is hard to believe how these people lived in complete unbelief toward God, despite having endured so much suffering.

Let us pray for obedience and submission to God’s will.
