Acest capitol poartă un mesaj urgent cel puțin pentru faptul că este introdus de un ,,vai”.

,,Vai de tine, ţară în care răsună zăngănit de arme şi care eşti dincolo de râurile Etiopiei!” (vers. 1)

După opinia multor teologi, mesajul acestui capitol este destinat Etiopiei, ,,țara în care răsună zăngănitul armelor și este dincolo de râurile Etiopiei” (vers. 1). Expresia ,,zăngănit de arme” din versiunea D. Cornilescu este tradusă în alte traduceri cu ,,aripile bâzâitoare”. 

Unii teologi spun că se referă la aripile lăcustelor, alții sugerează că se referă la pânzele corăbiilor bătute de vânt. Versetul 2 îndreptățește cea de-a doua variantă: ,,Tu, care trimiți soli pe mare în corăbii de papură, care plutesc pe luciul apelor! Duceţi-vă, soli iuţi, la neamul acela tare şi puternic, la poporul acela înfricoșat de la începutul lui, neam puternic care zdrobește totul și a cărui țară este tăiată de râuri!”

Mulți gânditori ai Bibliei susțin că ,,neamul acela tare şi puternic, la poporul acela înfricoșat de la începutul lui, neam puternic care zdrobește totul şi a cărui ţară este tăiată de râuri!” este de fapt Asiria. Ca și afluenții Nilului care brăzdează Egiptul, afluenții Eufratului brăzdează Asiria.

Una dintre cele mai comune interpretări ale acestui capitol susține că Etiopia încerca să realizeze o alianță cu Israelul pentru a face față amenințării Asiriei. Mesajul profetic i-a îndemnat pe etiopieni să se întoarcă acasă pentru că Dumnezeu îi va distruge pe asirieni. Este greu de spus dacă mesajul acestui capitol se referă doar la acest context istoric sau trece cu mult dincolo de el, referindu-se (și) la Împărăția milenară.

Ceea ce este suficient de clar este că cine stă de partea lui Dumnezeu va avea biruință și va fi cu Dumnezeu în cer pentru eternitate. Să ne rugăm pentru ascultare de Dumnezeu și pentru o viață închinată împlinirii intereselor Sale pe pământ.

This chapter carries an urgent message, as it begins with a “woe.”

“Woe to the land where the clanging of weapons is heard, beyond the rivers of Ethiopia!” (v. 1)

According to many theologians, the message of this chapter is addressed to Ethiopia, “the land where the clanging of weapons is heard and is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia” (v. 1). The phrase “the clanging of weapons” in the Cornilescu version is translated in other versions as “the buzzing of wings.” Some theologians suggest that it refers to the wings of locusts, while others argue it refers to the sails of ships fluttering in the wind. Verse 2 supports the latter interpretation: “You who send envoys by sea in papyrus vessels gliding over the waters! Go, swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, to a people feared far and wide, a nation mighty and conquering, whose land is divided by rivers!”

Many biblical scholars claim that the “nation tall and strong, feared from the beginning, a mighty nation that conquers all and whose land is divided by rivers” refers to Assyria. Just as the tributaries of the Nile cut through Egypt, the tributaries of the Euphrates cut through Assyria.

One of the most common interpretations of this chapter suggests that Ethiopia sought to form an alliance with Israel to withstand the threat of Assyria. The prophetic message advised the Ethiopians to return home because God would destroy the Assyrians. It is difficult to say whether the message of this chapter pertains solely to this historical context or extends far beyond it, referring also to the Millennial Kingdom.

What is clear enough is that those who stand with God will achieve victory and will be with Him in heaven for eternity. Let us pray for obedience to God and for a life dedicated to fulfilling His purposes on earth.
