În acest capitol este descris conflictul prorocului Ieremia cu un proroc mincinos, numit Hanania: „În acelaşi an, la începutul domniei lui Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, în luna a cincea a anului al patrulea, Hanania, fiul lui Azur, proroc din Gabaon, mi-a zis în Casa Domnului, în faţa preoţilor şi a întregului popor: „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Eu sfărâm jugul împăratului Babilonului! Peste doi ani, voi aduce înapoi în locul acesta toate uneltele Casei Domnului, pe care le-a ridicat Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului, din locul acesta şi le-a dus în Babilon.” (vers. 1-3)

Domnul i-a dat multe prorocii lui Ieremia prin care a spus că Nebucadneţar va distruge Templul, Ierusalimul şi Iuda. Poporul trebuie să se supună domniei lui Nebucadneţar şi să meargă în robie în Babilon, pentru că Domnul îi va aduce înapoi după 70 de ani. Dumnezeu i-a avertizat pe evreii care au refuzat să se supună regelui babilonian şi s-au ascuns în Egipt, spunându-le că vor fi omorâţi.

Acum, prorocul mincinos, Hanania, a prorocit contrariul, aducând confuzie, nesiguranţă şi neîncredere în minţile evreilor. Ieremia l-a confruntat, însă Hanania a insistat şi, luând jugul de pe umerii lui Ieremia, l-a sfărâmat izbindu-l de pământ şi spunând o prorocie falsă în faţa poporului adunat: „Atunci, prorocul Hanania a ridicat jugul de pe grumazul prorocului Ieremia şi l-a sfărâmat. Şi Hanania a zis în faţa întregului popor: „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ‘Aşa voi sfărâma peste doi ani de pe grumazul tuturor neamurilor jugul lui Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului!’” Prorocul Ieremia a plecat.” (vers. 10-11)

Dumnezeu i-a dat o profeţie foarte aspră lui Ieremia pentru Hanania, şi Hanania a murit: „Şi prorocul Ieremia a zis prorocului Hanania: „Ascultă, Hanania! Domnul nu te-a trimis, ci tu insufli poporului o încredere mincinoasă. De aceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ‘Iată, te izgonesc de pe pământ şi vei muri chiar în anul acesta, căci cuvintele tale sunt o răzvrătire împotriva Domnului.” Şi prorocul Hanania a murit chiar în anul acela, în luna a şaptea.” (vers. 15-17)

Este incredibilă încăpăţânarea şi nebunia acestui fals profet. Este incredibilă lipsa lui de teamă de Dumnezeu. Este incredibil curajul drăcesc de a-l confrunta pe Ieremia şi de a spune, din mintea lui întunecată, lucruri neadevărate. În faţa acestei atitudini blasfemiatoare, Dumnezeu l-a omorât: „Şi prorocul Hanania a murit chiar în anul acela, în luna a şaptea.” (vers. 17)

Să ne rugăm lui Dumnezeu să cântărim cu maturitate prorociile. Să avem o deplină încredere în oficiul profetic, însă să nu fim creduli, ci credincioşi. Să cântărim cu Scriptura prorociile pe care le auzim şi să analizăm cu Scriptura caracterul şi atitudinea prorocului. Prorocia nu va fi mai sfântă decât viaţa prorocului şi cum îi va fi viaţa, aşa îi va fi şi prorocia.

Wednesday, February 19, 2025 – Jeremiah 28:1-17

This chapter describes the conflict between the prophet Jeremiah and a false prophet named Hananiah: “In the same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, Hananiah son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, said to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people: ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon. Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles of the Lord’s house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from here and took to Babylon.”’” (vv. 1-3)

The Lord had given Jeremiah many prophecies stating that Nebuchadnezzar would destroy the Temple, Jerusalem, and Judah. The people were to submit to Nebuchadnezzar’s rule and go into captivity in Babylon because the Lord would bring them back after seventy years. God warned the Israelites who refused to submit to the Babylonian king and fled to Egypt, telling them that they would be killed.

Now, the false prophet Hananiah prophesied the opposite, bringing confusion, uncertainty, and distrust into the minds of the Israelites. Jeremiah confronted him, but Hananiah persisted. He took the yoke from Jeremiah’s shoulders, smashed it on the ground, and delivered a false prophecy in front of the gathered people: “Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it, and he said before all the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: “In the same way, within two years I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off the neck of all the nations.”’ At this, the prophet Jeremiah went on his way.” (vv. 10-11)

God gave Jeremiah a very harsh prophecy against Hananiah, and Hananiah died: “Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, ‘Listen, Hananiah! The Lord has not sent you, yet you have persuaded this nation to trust in lies. Therefore, this is what the Lord says: “I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This very year you are going to die because you have preached rebellion against the Lord.”’ In the seventh month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.” (vv. 15-17)

The stubbornness and foolishness of this false prophet are astonishing. His lack of fear of God is incredible. His devilish boldness to confront Jeremiah and declare falsehoods from his darkened mind is unbelievable. In response to this blasphemous attitude, God struck him down: “In the seventh month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.” (v. 17)

Let us pray that God grants us the wisdom to carefully weigh prophecies. We must have full confidence in the prophetic ministry, but we should not be gullible—rather, we should be faithful. Let us test prophecies against Scripture and examine the character and attitude of the prophet through the lens of Scripture. A prophecy will not be holier than the life of the prophet, and as his life is, so will his prophecy be.
