Sâmbătă, 2 decembrie 2023, 2 Regi 20:1-21 – Boala și vindecarea lui Ezechia

Expresia folosită la începutul capitolului de față – ,,în vremea aceea” – se referea la perioada invaziei asiriene. În descoperirea vindecării prin profetul Isaia, Dumnezeu i-a promis lui Ezechia și biruința națională: ,,Te voi izbăvi, pe tine şi cetatea aceasta, din mâna împăratului Asiriei şi voi ocroti cetatea aceasta din pricina Mea şi din pricina robului Meu David” (v. 6b).

Nu știm în mod concret în ce faza a invaziei se afla, dar, pe lângă frică și pregătirea pentru război, a mai apărut și frica și pregătirea pentru moarte. Ce a făcut când l-a amenințat Sanherib a făcut și când l-a amenințat boala terminală. Nu a fost nevoie să meargă la Isaia pentru că a venit Isaia la el. A venit să-i spună că va muri și trebuie să se pregătească (v. 1).  Ezechia a îndrăznit să se roage Domnului pentru viață: ,,Doamne, adu-Ţi aminte că am umblat înaintea Feţei Tale cu credincioşie şi curăţie de inimă, şi am făcut ce este bine înaintea Ta!“ Şi Ezechia a vărsat multe lacrimi“ (2 Regi 20:1-3).

Cât de puține lucruri s-au calificat să fie prezentate înaintea Domnului!

(1) Am umblat înaintea Feței Tale cu credincioșie;

(2) Am umblat înaintea Feței Tale cu multă curăție de inimă;

(3) Am făcut ce este bine înaintea Ta.

Așa de multe lucruri face un om într-o viață și, totuși, doar câteva vor conta înaintea Domnului! Meditația este un profund exercițiu de responsabilitate!

Isaia nici nu ieșise din curtea casei împăratului și Dumnezeu i-a vorbit din nou. Profetul s-a întors la împărat și i-a spus din partea lui Dumnezeu următorul mesaj:

1) „Ți-am auzit rugăciunea” (v. 5a);

2) „Am văzut lacrimile” (v. 5b);

3) „Te vei face sănătos, a treia zi vei merge la Templu și vei trăi încă 5 ani” (v. 6a).

Dumnezeu îi spune lui Ezechia că îl vindecă datorită numelui Său și datorită credincioșiei Sale față de David (v. 6b). Înțelegem din faptul că Isaia nu a avut timp să iasă din curte că Ezechia a făcut o rugăciune scurtă. Noi toți știm că nu lungimea rugăciunii contează, însă lungimea are valoarea ei.

Ezechia a scris o cântare de laudă în cinstea Dumnezeului Preaînalt care ascultă rugăciunile oamenilor înlăcrimați (Isaia 38:9-20). Încadrându-se în tiparul specific muritorilor, Ezechia nu a putut termina la nivelul excelenței viața și activitatea sa.

„În acelaş timp, Berodac-Baladan, fiul lui Baladan, împăratul Babilonului, a trimis o scrisoare şi un dar lui Ezechia, căci auzise de boala lui Ezechia. Ezechia a ascultat pe soli, şi le-a arătat locul unde erau lucrurile lui de preţ, argintul şi aurul, mirodeniile şi untdelemnul cel scump, casa lui cu arme şi tot ce se afla în vistieriile lui: n-a fost nimic pe care să nu li-l fi arătat Ezechia în casa lui şi în toate moşiile lui“ (2 Regi 20:12-13).

În loc să se laude cu Dumnezeu în fața acestor păgâni, el s-a lăudat cu binecuvântările lui Dumnezeu. Isaia a trebuit să-i mai facă o vizită și să-l mustre pentru mândria sa, prevestind război și jale după moartea lui: „Ce au văzut trimișii împăratului Babilonului, va merge în Babilon” (v. 12-18).

Ca și când mândria nu ar fi fost suficientă, Ezechia lasă loc și egoismului în inima lui: „Bine că va fi pace și liniște în timpul vieții mele” (v. 19). „Ezechia a avut multe bogăţii şi multă slavă. Şi-a făcut vistierii de argint, de aur, de pietre scumpe, de mirodenii, de scuturi, şi de toate lucrurile care se pot dori; hambare pentru roadele de grâu, de must şi de untdelemn, grajduri pentru tot felul de vite, şi staule pentru oi. Şi-a zidit cetăţi, şi a avut belşug de boi şi de oi; căci Dumnezeu îi dăduse multe avuţii. Tot Ezechia a astupat şi gura de sus a apelor Ghihon, şi le-a adus în jos spre apus de cetatea lui David“ (2 Cron. 32:27-30).

În anul 1910, sub temelia de piatră a Ierusalimului a fost descoperit un tunel de aproximativ 490 de metri, numit „tunelul lui Ezechia“. Prin acest tunel se poate merge din pârâul Ghihon până în scăldătoarea Siloamului. Acesta a fost tunelul construit de Ezechia pentru a aduce prin cădere liberă apa din munte.

Fiind timpul să ne rugăm, vom mulțumi Domnului că ne ascultă rugăciunile atunci când suntem bolnavi. Ori de câte ori ne împlinește rugăciunile de boală, Dumnezeu face o minune ca să ne vindece. Slavă Lui! Apoi vom cere Domnului statornicie în viața de credință. Dumnezeu să ne ajute să creștem și să ne maturizăm în viața spirituală, aducând rodul bogat al mărturiei și slujirii noastre.

 Saturday, December 2, 2023: 2 Kings 20:1-21 – Hezekiah's Illness and Healing

The phrase used at the beginning of this chapter – “at that time” – referred to the period of the Assyrian invasion. In the revelation of healing through the prophet Isaiah, God promised Hezekiah national deliverance as well: “I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city for My sake and for the sake of My servant David” (v. 6b).

We do not know exactly what phase of the invasion it was, but, in addition to fear and preparation for war, there was also the fear and preparation for death. What he did when Sennacherib threatened him, he also did when a terminal illness threatened. He did not need to go to Isaiah because Isaiah came to him. He came to tell him that he would die and that he should prepare (v. 1). Hezekiah dared to pray to the Lord for life: “Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.” (2 Kings 20:1-3).

So few things qualified to be presented before the Lord!

1)    I have walked before You in truth;

2)    I have walked before You with a perfect heart;

3)    I have done what is good in Your sight.

A person does so many things in a lifetime, and yet, only a few will count before the Lord! Meditation is a profound exercise in responsibility!

Isaiah had not even left the royal courtyard when God spoke to him again. The prophet returned to the king and gave him the following message from God:

1)    “I have heard your prayer” (v. 5a);

2)    “I have seen your tears” (v. 5b);

3)    “You shall recover; on the third day, you shall go up to the Temple, and you shall live another 15 years” (v. 6a).

God tells Hezekiah that He is healing him for His name's sake and because of His faithfulness to David (v. 6b). We understand from the fact that Isaiah had no time to leave the courtyard that Hezekiah said a short prayer. We all know that it is not the length of the prayer that counts, but length does have its value.

Hezekiah wrote a song of praise in honor of the Most High God who hears the prayers of weeping people (Isaiah 38:9-20). Fitting into the pattern typical of mortals, Hezekiah could not end his life and work at a level of excellence.

“At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of Hezekiah’s illness.  Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine olive oil—his armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them” (2 Kings 20:12-13).

Instead of boasting about God in front of the pagans, he boasted about God's blessings. Isaiah had to visit him again and rebuke him for his pride, predicting war and sorrow after his death: “the time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon” (v. 12-18).

As if pride were not enough, Hezekiah also allowed selfishness in his heart: “The word of the Lord you have spoken is good…Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime” (v. 19). “Hezekiah had very great wealth and honor, and he made treasuries for his silver and gold and for his precious stones, spices, shields and all kinds of valuables. He also made buildings to store the harvest of grain, new wine and olive oil; and he made stalls for various kinds of cattle, and pens for the flocks. He built villages and acquired great numbers of flocks and herds, for God had given him very great riches. It was Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Gihon spring and channeled the water down to the west side of the City of David. He succeeded in everything he undertook” (2 Chronicles 32:27-30).

In the year 1910, under the stone foundation of Jerusalem, a tunnel about 490 meters long, known as “Hezekiah's Tunnel,” was discovered. Through this tunnel, one can walk from the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam. This was the tunnel built by Hezekiah to bring water by gravity from the mountain.

As it is time to pray, we will thank the Lord for listening to our prayers when we are sick. Whenever God fulfills our prayers for illness, He performs a miracle to heal us. Glory to Him! Then we will ask the Lord for steadfastness in the life of faith. May God help us to grow and mature in our spiritual life, bringing forth the rich fruit of our testimony and service.
