Marți, 8 august 2023, Judecători 7:1-25 – Victoria lui Ghedeon asupra madianiților

Ghedeon împreună cu 32.000 de soldați s-au adunat la poalele Muntelui Ghilboa. Madianiții aveau o armată de patru ori mai mare – 135.000 de soldați. Pentru că Dumnezeu avea intenția ca evreii să-i învingă pe Madianiți și pentru că a vrut să-l ferească pe Ghedeon de păcatul mândriei, i-a cerut acestuia să micșoreze numărul soldaților evrei prin două metode de selecție:

1)    Metoda curajului (v. 3) – astfel, 22.000 de soldați s-au întors acasă;

2)    Metoda atenției (v. 7) – 9.700 de soldați au plecat acasă.

Cu cei 300 de oameni rămași, Dumnezeu le-a dat victoria asupra puternicei armate madianite care a încercat să-și scape viața fugind. Ghedeon a chemat semințiile Neftali, Așer și Manase, i-au urmărit și i-au distrus pe fugari.

În rugăciunea care urmează vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru că ne învață să slujim împreună cu alții. În felul acesta evităm ispita de a gândi sau spune că (doar) prin ,,mine/noi” a lucrat Dumnezeu. Mai mult, Domnul ne învață să evităm proeminența și atunci când aceasta este evidentă. Firea pământească simte nevoia să conducă, să fie prima, să se laude, să se afișeze, să fie prezentă peste tot, să-și asume meritele. Ghedeon a împărțit ,,slava” victoriei cu alte trei seminții. El avea nevoie de victorie, nu de slava victoriei, drept pentru care a împărțit-o cu alții.

Tuesday, August 8, 2023: Judges 7:1-25 – Gideon's Victory Over the Midianites

Gideon and 32,000 soldiers gathered at the foot of Mount Gilboa. The Midianites had an army four times larger – 135,000 soldiers. Because God intended for the Jews to defeat the Midianites and because He wanted to protect Gideon from the sin of pride, He asked him to reduce the number of Jewish soldiers through two selection methods:

1)    Method of courage (v. 3) – thus, 22,000 soldiers returned home;

2)    Method of attention (v. 7) – 9,700 soldiers left home.

With the remaining 300 men, God gave them victory over the powerful Midianite army who tried to save their own lives by fleeing. Gideon summoned the tribes of Naphtali, Asher, and Manasseh, chased them, and destroyed the fugitives.

In the following prayer, we will thank God for teaching us to serve together with others. In this way, we avoid the temptation to think or say that God worked through “me/us” (alone). Moreover, the Lord teaches us to avoid prominence even when it is evident. The earthly nature feels the need to lead, to be the first, to boast, to show off, to be present everywhere, to take credit. Gideon shared the “glory” of victory with three other tribes. He needed victory, not the glory of victory, which is why he shared it with others.
