Marți, 7 februarie 2023, Geneza 35:1-29 – Iacov la Betel și moartea lui Isaac

Dumnezeu îl cheamă pe Iacov la Betel, pentru că acolo, cu mai bine de 20 de ani în urmă, Iacov făcuse câteva juruințe lui Dumnezeu, juruințe pe care nu le împlinise: (1) Iehova va fi Dumnezeul lui Iacov; (2) Betelul va fi casa lui Dumnezeu; (3) Iacov să-I dea zeciuială lui Dumnezeu (Gen. 28:16-22).

Instrucțiunile pe care Iacov le dă familiei lui semnalează faptul că el realizează apropierea unui eveniment special (35:2-3). Pentru a-și respecta juruințele făcute lui Dumnezeu, Iacov și familia lui trebuiau să renunțe la toți idolii, la toți dumnezeii străini. Dumnezeu nu acceptă rivali.

Iacov a îngropat în pământ bijuteriile și idolii familiei lui, apoi au mers la Betel să se închine (32 km/20 mile de Sihem). A ridicat un altar și Dumnezeu i-a vorbit lui Iacov, reconfirmând promisiunea făcută mai înainte (32:28). În această nouă binecuvântare, Dumnezeu a adăugat că printre urmașii lui Iacov vor fi și împărați. Cu mai mult de 20 de ani în urmă, aici, la Betel, Iacov ridicase un stâlp de piatră pe care l-a uns cu untdelemn (28:18). Acum, Iacov a ridicat un stâlp de aducere aminte, un stâlp de piatră pe care a turnat o jertfă de băutură și untdelemn (35:14). Prin aceste juruințe, Iacov recunoaște nu doar că el Îi aparține lui Dumnezeu, ci și faptul că țara Îi aparține lui Dumnezeu.

După închinarea la Betel, Rahela moare în timpul nașterii lui Beniamin (Ben-Oni). Aici se încheie povestea de iubire a lui Iacov. Căsătoria cu Rahela l-a implicat pe Iacov într-o perioadă de zdrobire și maturizare: înșelăciunea lui Laban, șocul din dimineața nunții, când în pat lângă el era Lea, în loc să fie Rahela… Singur între străini și departe de casă, și-a abandonat responsabilitățile de soț și tată, refugiindu-se în munca lui.

Faptul că Iacov a iubit-o mult pe Rahela a produs multă adversitate în familie. Tensiunile dintre Rahela și Lea au generat multă amărăciune lui Iacov. Probabil că moartea Rahelei l-a îndurerat atât de mult pe Iacov, încât restul vieții nu și-a mai asumat în mod activ responsabilitățile de familie. Un exemplu grăitor este situația în care Ruben s-a culcat Bilha, țiitoarea lui Iacov. Deși Iacov a aflat, a preferat să tacă, însă l-a penalizat, înjumătățindu-i binecuvântarea pe care a rostit-o peste el și ceilalți 11 copii ai săi înainte de moarte (Gen. 49).

În această dimineață vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru binecuvântarea dată familiilor noastre până în prezent. Înțelegând lecția vieții lui Ruben, ne vom ruga lui Dumnezeu pentru o inimă, o minte și o viață curată.

 Tuesday, February 7, 2023: Genesis 35:1-29 – Jacob at Bethel and the Death of Isaac

            God calls Jacob to Bethel because there, more than 20 years prior, Jacob had made several vows to God, vows that he had not fulfilled: (1) Jehovah would be Jacob’s God; (2)Bethel would be the house of God ;  (3) Jacob would tithe to God (Gen.28:16-22).

     Jacob’s instructions to his family signal that he realizes the approaching of a special event ( 35:2-3 ). To fulfill all his vows to God, Jacob and his family had to renounce all their idols and all the foreign gods. God does not accept rivals. Jacob buried all his family’s jewels and idols, then he went to Bethel to worship God (32 Km/20 miles from Sechem).  He built an altar and God spoke to Jacob, reconfirming the promise that He had made before (32:28). In this new blessing, God added that there would be kings among Jacob’s descendants. More than 20 years earlier, Jacob had built a stone pillar and poured oil on the top of it (28:18) at Bethel. Now Jacob built a pillar of remembrance, a pillar of stones on which he poured out a drink offering and poured oil on it (35:14). Through these vows, Jacob recognized not only that he himself belonged to God, but also that the land (country) belonged to God .

     After a time of worship at Bethel, Rachel dies during the birth of Benjamin ( Ben-Oni ). Jacob’s love story ends here. His marriage with Rachel was a crushing and maturing period of his life: Laban’s deception, the shock in the morning after his wedding night, when Leah was in bed with him instead of Rachel… Alone among strangers and far away from home, he abandoned his responsibilities of husband and father, taking refuge in his work.

     The fact that Jacob loved Rachel a lot, produced a lot of adversity in the family. The tensions between Rachel and Leah generated a lot of bitterness in Jacob. Rachel’s death likely produced so much pain in Jacob that for the rest of his life he did not actively partake in his family responsibilities. An eloquent example of this situation is when Ruben laid with Bilhah, Jacob’s concubine. Even though Jacob found out, he preferred to say nothing, but instead punished him, giving him only half of the blessings he gave to his other 11 children before his death. (Gen. 49)

    This morning we will thank God for the blessings that He has bestowed upon our families until now. In understanding the lesson from Ruben’s life, we will ask God to give us a clean heart, mind, and life.
