Psalmul 40 prezintă experiența de viață a regelui David care a trecut prin valurile vieții, însă Dumnezeu a fost cu el în fiecare zi și i-a dat biruință. În primele zece versete, David vorbește despre protecția și dragostea lui Dumnezeu: ,,Îmi pusesem nădejdea în Domnul, şi El S-a plecat spre mine, mi-a ascultat strigătele. M-a scos din groapa pieirii, din fundul mocirlei; mi-a pus picioarele pe stâncă şi mi-a întărit paşii. Mi-a pus în gură o cântare nouă, o laudă pentru Dumnezeul nostru. Mulţi au văzut lucrul acesta, s-au temut şi s-au încrezut în Domnul. Ferice de omul care îşi pune încrederea în Domnul şi care nu se îndreaptă spre cei trufaşi şi mincinoşi. Doamne Dumnezeule, multe sunt minunile şi planurile Tale pentru mine: nimeni nu se poate asemăna cu Tine. Aş vrea să le vestesc şi să le trâmbiţez, dar numărul lor este prea mare ca să le povestesc.” (vers. 1-5)
În acest pasaj David punctează manifestarea îndurării lui Dumnezeu:
1. Dumnezeu l-a ascultat: ,,El S-a plecat spre mine, mi-a ascultat strigătele” (vers. 1).
2. Dumnezeu l-a ridicat: ,,M-a scos din groapa pieirii” (vers. 2a).
3. Dumnezeu l-a împuternicit: ,,mi-ai întărit pașii” (vers. 2b).
4. Dumnezeu l-a bucurat: ,,Mi-ai pus în gură o cântare nouă” (vers. 3).
Următoarele șapte versete se constituie în rugăciunea regelui, care imploră ajutorul lui Dumnezeu în nevoile și primejdiile în care a ajuns.
1. Psalmistul este într-o situație fără ieșire: ,,Căci rele fără număr mă împresoară” (vers. 12).
2. David este într-un pericol iminent: ,,Izbăvește-mă, Doamne, vino, Doamne, degrabă în ajutorul meu” (vers. 13).
3. David pune toate probleme lui în mâna lui Dumnezeu și se odihnește în această credință care produce speranță: ,,Eu sunt sărac şi lipsit, dar Domnul Se gândeşte la mine. Tu eşti ajutorul şi izbăvitorul meu: nu zăbovi, Dumnezeule!” (vers. 17)
Psalmul acesta prezintă două mari lecții de viață:
1. De la stabilitate și bucurie până la necaz și suferință este doar un pas. În primele zece versete, David se laudă cu biruința lui Dumnezeu. În următoarele șapte versete, regele strigă după ajutorul lui Dumnezeu.
2. Nu necazul este marea problemă a oamenilor, ci felul în care se uită la el – fără credință și fără speranță. Viața este imprevizibilă pentru toți, însă pentru Dumnezeu nu este nimic imprevizibil.

Psalm 40 presents King David’s life experiences; David went through the roller coaster of life, but God was with him every day and gave him victory. In the first ten verses, David speaks of God's protection and love: “I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.” (verses 1-5)
In this passage, David highlights the manifestation of God's mercy:
1. God listened to him: “He turned to me and heard my cry” (verse 1).
2. God lifted him: “He lifted me out of the slimy pit” (verse 2a).
3. God empowered him: “He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand” (verse 2b).
4. God gave him joy: “He put a new song in my mouth” (verse 3).
The next seven verses consist of the king's prayer, imploring God's help for his needs and dangers.
1. The psalmist is in a hopeless situation: “For troubles without number surround me” (verse 12).
2. David is in imminent danger: “Be pleased to save me, Lord; come quickly, Lord, to help me” (verse 13).
3. David puts all his problems in God's hands and rests in this faith which produces hope: “But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay.” (verse 17)
This psalm presents two major life lessons:
1. There is only one step between stability and joy and trouble and suffering. In the first ten verses, David boasts of God's victory. In the next seven verses, the king cries out for God's help.
2. Trouble itself is not the great problem for people, but how they view it – without faith and without hope. Life is unpredictable for everyone, but for God, nothing is unpredictable.
