Sâmbătă, 5 august 2023, Judecători 4:1-24 – Debora și Barac

Dacă celelalte războaie au fost provocate de popoare din afara Țării Sfinte, asupritorii aceștia erau canaaniții care locuiau în țară și nu fuseseră izgoniți de Israel la intrarea în Canaan (Judecători 1:3-33). Este dureroasă, dramatică și îngrozitoare pasiunea evreilor spre închinarea păgână a canaaniților rămași în țară (3:7, 12). După moartea lui Ehud, poporul ,,iarăși au făcut ce nu place Domnului” (v. 1) și, drept pedeapsă, Dumnezeu ,,i-a dat” (i-a lăsat) în mâna canaaniților.

Capitolul 4 se concentrează pe asuprirea semințiilor din nord de către o coaliție de canaaniți. Dumnezeu, care i-a eliberat pe evrei din Egipt cu aproximativ 200 de ani înainte, i-a lăsat acum să fie stăpâniți de canaaniți, ca o pedeapsă pentru păcatele lor. Cât de rău poate fi omul! Este îngrozitor că oamenii uneori nu învață nimic din propriile lor experiențe și le repetă cu inconștiență, în ciuda consecințelor extrem de amare.

Asuprirea canaanită a fost grea și lungă, aproximativ 20 de ani. Superioritatea lor militară era evidentă – aveau peste 900 de care de fier. Israel a strigat către Dumnezeu și El i-a eliberat prin Debora, prorociță și judecător. Debora a avut un mesaj profetic din partea lui Dumnezeu pentru Barac. Domnul îi cerea lui Barac să adune zece mii de oameni din semințiile Zabulon și Neftali și să meargă cu ei la Muntele Tabor. Barac a acceptat sub condiția să vină și Debora împreună cu el. Ciudată cerere! Ea a acceptat, însă l-a avertizat că onoarea victoriei o va lua o femeie. S-a referit la ea sau cel mai probabil la Iael (v. 21).

La porunca lui Dumnezeu și la încurajarea Deborei, Barac a condus armata și a învins puternica armată a canaaniților (v. 14-16). Sisera, căpetenia oștirii canaanite, a fugit în Hator, o cetate de scăpare. Iael, soția lui Iabin, apropiatul lui Heber, regele Hatorului, l-a primit și l-a ascuns în cortul ei, l-a acoperit cu o pânză, însă când a adormit, ea l-a ucis cu un țăruș. În felul acesta s-a împlinit profeția Deborei (4:9). Canaaniții și-au pierdut influența și Israel s-a bucurat de pace în ținutul din nordul țării.

Ne vom ruga, mulțumindu-I lui Dumnezeu că Se implică în crizele și luptele noastre. El este apărătorul nostru, indiferent cine sunt oamenii pe care îi folosește. Uneori folosește lucruri sau oameni care nu par a fi capabili să ne scape. O femeie a inițiat victoria evreilor asupra canaaniților. Vom continua rugăciunea cerând Domnului să ne ajute să-I fim credincioși, loiali, fideli. Este timpul să învățăm că Dumnezeu este apărătorul și binecuvântătorul nostru, indiferent de metodele pe care le folosește să ne apere sau să ne binecuvânteze. Slavă lui Dumnezeu!

Saturday, August 5, 2023: Judges 4:1-24 – Deborah and Barak

If the other wars were provoked by people from outside the Holy Land, these oppressors were the Canaanites who lived in the country and had not been driven out by Israel upon their entrance in Canaan (Judges 1:3-33). The passion of the Hebrews for the pagan worship of the remaining Canaanites in the country is painful, dramatic, and horrific (3:7, 12). After the death of Ehud, the people “again did what displeased the Lord” (v. 1), and as punishment, God “gave them” (allowed them) into the hands of the Canaanites.

Chapter 4 focuses on the oppression of the northern tribes by a coalition of Canaanites. God, who had freed the Jews from Egypt about 200 years prior, now allowed them to be dominated by Canaanites as a punishment for their sins. How terrible man can be! It's terrifying that people sometimes learn nothing from their own experiences and repeat them recklessly, despite the extremely bitter consequences.

The Canaanite oppression was severe and long, about 20 years. Their military superiority was evident – they had over 900 iron chariots. Israel cried out to God, and He delivered them through Deborah, a prophetess, and judge. Deborah had a prophetic message from God for Barak. The Lord asked Barak to gather ten thousand men from the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali and go with them to Mount Tabor. Barak agreed on the condition that Deborah would go with him. A strange request! She agreed but warned him that the honor of victory would go to a woman. She was referring to herself or more likely to Jael (v. 21).

At God's command and Deborah's encouragement, Barak led the army and defeated the mighty army of the Canaanites (v. 14-16). Sisera, the chief of the Canaanite army, fled to Hatzor, a refuge city. Jael, the wife of Heber, the ally of King Jabin of Hatzor, welcomed him and hid him in her tent, covered him with a blanket, but when he fell asleep, she killed him with a stake. In this way Deborah's prophecy (4:9) was fulfilled. The Canaanites lost their influence and Israel enjoyed peace in the northern part of the country.

We will now pray, thanking God that He gets involved in our crises and fights. He is our defender, no matter who the people He uses are. Sometimes He uses things or people that don't seem capable of rescuing us. A woman initiated the victory of the Jews over the Canaanites. We will continue to pray, asking the Lord to help us be faithful, loyal, reliable. It's time to learn that God is our defender and blesses us, regardless of the methods He uses to defend us or bless us. Glory to God!
