Vineri, 30 iunie 2023, Deuteronom 27:1-29 – Binecuvântările și blestemele Legământului

Dumnezeu Se prezintă pe Sine ca fiind Stăpânul poporului Israel. De șase ori apare în cartea Deuteronom expresia ,,cum și-a spus Domnul Dumnezeul părinților tăi”. Responsabilitatea acestui popor era să asculte de Stăpânul lui: ,,dacă vei păzi poruncile Mele”.

Pentru că Moise a fost pedepsit să nu ,,vadă țara”, înainte să intre în Canaan, Dumnezeu a poruncit poporul, în câmpia Moabului, ce să facă după ce va intra în Țara Promisă (1-8). Poporul trebuia ridice pe muntele Ebal niște pietre mari, să le tencuiască cu var și să scrie pe ele Legea Domnului. Tehnicile antice de scriere includeau cerneala pe papirus (Egipt), stilet pe tableta de lut (Mesopotamia), dalta pe piatră și un băț acoperit cu ceară pe table de lemn. Săpatul în piatră, deși era cel mai sigur, consuma prea mult timp. În cultura noastră, scrierea pe piatră se folosește doar pe inscripțiile memoriale și pe piatra de pe mormânt.

Garizim și Ebal erau munții care înconjurau orașul Sihem. Altarul despre care se vorbește în acest pasaj este construit în Iosua 8. La Sihem Domnul i S-a arătat pentru prima oara lui Avraam, iar el a construit acolo un altar și s-a închinat lui Dumnezeu (Geneza 12:6). Dumnezeu a ales în mod intenționat acest loc pentru a sublinia importanța promisiunilor de la început.

După ce au ridicat pietrele mari pe care era scrisa Legea Domnului și altarul pe muntele Ebal, șase seminții s-au urcat pe muntele Ebal ca să rostească blesteme și șase seminții s-au urcat pe muntele Garizim să rostească binecuvântări. Între acești doi munți se afla o vale în Samaria. Leviții stăteau în această vale și rosteau cu voce tare binecuvântările și blestemele. Cât de scrupulos a fost Dumnezeu cu această sărbătoare de conștientizare a importanței sfințeniei poporului! ,,…Ți-am pus înainte viața și moartea, binecuvântarea și blestemul. Alege viața, ca să trăiești, tu și sămânța ta” (30:19).

Urmează să ne rugăm și după cum se cuvine, vom începe cu rugăciunea de mulțumire. Vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru că ni S-a descoperit, că ne-a vorbit, că ne-a explicat voia Sa. Vom continua rugăciunea cerând de la El puterea, consecvența și disciplina de a împlini voia Sa. La dreapta este binecuvântarea, la stânga este blestemul, iar omul alege.

Friday, June 30, 2023: Deuteronomy 27:1-29 – The Blessings and Curses of the Covenant

God presents Himself as the Lord of the people of Israel. In the book of Deuteronomy, the phrase “as the Lord God of your fathers has said” appears six times. The responsibility of the people was to obey their Lord: “if you will keep My commandments“.

Since Moses was punished not to “see the land“, before entering Canaan, God commanded the people, in the plains of Moab, what to do after entering the Promised Land (1-8).

The people had to raise large stones on Mount Ebal, plaster them with lime, and write the Law of the Lord on them. Ancient writing techniques included ink on papyrus (Egypt), stylus on clay tablet (Mesopotamia), chisel on stone, and a stick covered with wax on wooden tablets. Carving into stone, although the safest, was too time-consuming.

In our culture, writing on stone is only used on memorial inscriptions and on gravestones. Garizim and Ebal were the mountains that surrounded the city of Shechem. The altar mentioned in this passage is built in Joshua 8. The Lord first appeared to Abraham at Shechem, and he built an altar there and worshiped God (Genesis 12:6). God intentionally chose this place to highlight the importance of the initial promises.

After they raised the large stones on which the Law of the Lord was written and the altar on Mount Ebal, six tribes climbed Mount Ebal to pronounce curses, and six tribes climbed Mount Garizim to pronounce blessings. Between these two mountains was a valley in Samaria. The Levites stood in this valley and pronounced blessings and curses aloud. How scrupulous was God with this celebration of awareness of the importance of the sanctity of the people! “…I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live” (30:19).

It is time to pray, and as it is appropriate, we will begin with a prayer of thanksgiving. We will thank God for revealing Himself to us, for speaking to us, for explaining His will. We will continue the prayer by asking Him for the power, consistency, and discipline to fulfill His will. On the right is the blessing, on the left is the curse, and man makes his choice.
