Un profet al lui Dumnezeu a venit din Iuda la Betel să mustre sistemul idolatru de închinare al lui Ieroboam. Profeția lui s-a împlinit peste 290 de ani, când împăratul Iosia a dărâmat altarul de la Betel și i-a omorât pe preoții falși.

Ieroboam a poruncit arestarea profetului, însă atunci când a întins mâna spre el, mâna lui s-a uscat. Împăratul s-a căit, recunoscând puterea lui Dumnezeu, și a fost vindecat. Împăratul s-a referit la Dumnezeu cu numele ,,Dumnezeul tău”, nu ,,Dumnezeul meu”, dovedindu-și în felul acesta idolatria. În semn de recunoștință, împăratul l-a invitat pe profet la palat pentru a-i oferi o masă și un dar, însă profetul a refuzat și a plecat acasă, după porunca primită de la Dumnezeu.

La Betel locuia și un alt proroc, care era bătrân. El a plecat călare pe un animal după proorcul tânăr, și când l-a ajuns din urmă, l-a invitat la masă. Prorocul tânăr a refuzat, după Cuvântul Domnului (vers. 17). Atunci, prorocul bătrân l-a mințit pe prorocul tânăr, spunându-i că Dumnezeu i-a descoperit că instrucțiunile inițiale nu mai sunt valabile.

Încrezându-se în cuvântul prorocului bătrân, prorocul tânăr s-a întors și a mâncat în casa lui. În timp ce erau la masă, Domnul i-a vorbit prin prorocul bătrân, deși acesta păcătuise, spunându-i că la întoarcerea spre casă va fi omorât de un leu, ca pedeapsă că nu a respectat instrucțiunile cuvântului Domnului.

Biblia nu explică de ce prorocul bătrân l-a mințit pe cel tânăr. Poate din gelozie, dorind să atragă pedeapsa Domnului peste el, sau poate din respect, dorind să-l invite în casa lui și să mănânce împreună. La întoarcerea spre casă, un leu l-a omorât pe prorocul tânăr. Prorocul bătrân, fiind înștiințat de niște trecători (vers. 25), a luat trupul prorocului tânăr, l-a plâns și l-a îngropat în mormântul personal (vers. 29-30).

Această experiență arată importanța respectării Cuvântului lui Dumnezeu și a fost o lecție din partea Domnului pentru Iereboam și oamenii de la palat. Ieroboam însă a continuat să sfideze Cuvântul Domnului, punând oameni în slujba de preoți să slujească pe înălțimile idolilor (14:9). Pentru apostazia în care a trăit, Dumnezeu l-a omorât pe Ieroboam și a șters familia lui de pe fața pământului.

Urmează să ne rugăm, însă mesajul dramatic și plin de întrebări al acestui capitol ne pune pe gânduri. Vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru că ne transmite un mesaj foarte clar. Când primești un mesaj de la Dumnezeu, să-l împlinești întocmai, cu orice preț. Apoi, ne vom ruga Domnului să ne dea înțelepciune și călăuzire. Prorocul cel tânăr a păcătuit fiindcă nu a ascultat cuvântul pe care Domnul ia descoperit lui, însă a ascultat cuvântul ,,descoperit” prin procului bătrân. El a sfidat propria lui experiență spirituală, bazându-se mai mult pe experiența spirituală a unui proroc pe care nu-l cunoștea.

Friday, November 3, 2023: 1 Kings 13:1-34 – The Prophet and the Altar

A prophet of God came from Judah to Bethel to rebuke Jeroboam's idolatrous worship system. His prophecy was fulfilled 290 years later when King Josiah demolished the altar in Bethel and killed the false priests.

Jeroboam ordered the arrest of the prophet, but when he reached out to touch him, his hand withered. The king repented, recognizing God's power, and was healed. He referred to God as “your God” rather than “my God“, thereby showing his idolatry. Out of gratitude, the king invited the prophet to the palace to offer him a meal and a gift, but the prophet refused and went home, following God's command.

In Bethel, there also lived another prophet who was old. He rode on an animal, chasing the young prophet, and when he caught up with him, he invited him for a meal. The young prophet declined, according to the Word of the Lord (verse 17). Then, the old prophet lied to the young one, saying that God revealed to him that the initial instructions were no longer valid.

Trusting the old prophet's words, the young prophet returned and ate in his house. While they were eating, the Lord spoke through the old prophet, even though he had sinned, telling him that on his way home he would be killed by a lion as a punishment for not obeying the Lord's instructions.

The Bible does not explain why the old prophet lied to the young one. Perhaps out of jealousy, wishing to bring God's punishment upon him, or maybe out of respect, wanting to invite him into his home and eat together. On the way back, a lion killed the young prophet. The old prophet, informed by some passers-by (verse 25), took the young prophet's body, mourned for him, and buried him in his own tomb (verses 29-30).

This experience highlights the importance of obeying God's Word and served as a lesson from the Lord to Jeroboam and the palace people. However, Jeroboam continued to defy God's Word, appointing men to serve as priests in idolatrous high places (14:9). Because of his apostasy, God killed Jeroboam and wiped his family off the face of the earth.

We are going to pray, but the dramatic and thought-provoking message of this chapter makes us reflect. We will thank God for delivering a very clear message. When you receive a message from God, fulfill it exactly, at any cost. Then, we will pray for wisdom and guidance. The young prophet sinned because he did not listen to the word that the Lord had revealed to him but listened to the word “revealed” through the old prophet. He defied his own spiritual experience, relying more on the spiritual experience of a prophet he did not know.
