Duminică, 3 martie 2024, Neemia 9:38-10:39 – Înnoirea legământului

În urma mărturisirii păcatelor, poporul a experimentat trezirea spirituală și bucuria eliberării. În această stare, conducătorii civili (administratorii) și slujitorii religioși (preoții și leviții) au inițiat și au pecetluit un legământ de loialitate față de Dumnezeu (9:38). În capul listei a fost trecut numele lui Neemia, apoi al preoților, al leviților și al oamenilor din popor.

Poporul a jurat să umble în Legea Domnului (v. 29). Aceasta înseamnă că ei au fost de acord să fie pedepsiți prin calamități dacă nu-și vor respecta promisiunea. Legământul lor a avut câteva stipulații:

–       să evite căsătoriile mixte, cu cei din alte popoare (v. 30);

–       să respecte Ziua Sabatului și Anul Sabatic;

–       să ofere sprijin financiar – a treia parte dintr-un siclu pe an (circa 60 de grame). Aceste daruri erau pentru preoți și leviți ca să poată cumpăra pâinile care erau puse înaintea Domnului și jertfele care trebuiau aduse.

–       să aducă lemne pentru focul de sub altar pentru arderile de tot;

–       să aducă cele dintâi roade ale pământului;

–       să-i aducă pe întâii lor născuți și pe întâii născuți ai animalelor lor;

–       să aducă zeciuiala anuală.

Leviții dădeau zeciuială din zeciuiala lor. S-au angajat cu jurământ să nu părăsească Casa Domnului.

Dacă privim cu atenție, manifestarea credincioșiei și ascultarea de Legile Domnului în VT presupunea o mulțime de lucruri, mult efort și multă cheltuială. Dragostea nu are limite, dar legea are. De aceea dragostea este cea mai mare poruncă. Cine iubește nu trebuie să mai facă altceva. Un om care iubește va fi pe deplin concentrat să facă bine persoanei iubite.

Stând înaintea Domnului în timpul dedicat rugăciunii, ne oprim cu umilință să ne rugăm pentru dragoste. Dumnezeu să ne umple inimile cu dragoste pentru membrii familiei noastre, pentru frații și surorile din biserică, pentru dușmani și pentru absolut toți oamenii. Aici este locul potrivit să ne amintim cele două valențe ale poruncii:

1.     Nu faceți bine celor care pot să va facă bine înapoi. Acest fel de bine nu costă, ci este comercial – îi dai ca să-ți dea înapoi.

2.     Cel mai bolnav dintre noi are cea mai mare nevoie de doctor. Adevărul este că suntem tentați să-i disprețuim și să-i judecăm pe cei ,,foarte bolnavi”. Aceasta este dovada lipsei de iubire, de milă – ,,mila biruiește judecata”.

Să vii la biserică este mai ușor decât să fii credincios; să fii credincios este mai ușor decât să fii sfânt!

Sunday, March 3, 2024: Nehemiah 9:38-10:39 – Renewal of the Covenant

Following the confession of their sins, the people experienced a spiritual awakening and the joy of liberation. In this state, the civil leaders (administrators) and religious servants (priests and Levites) initiated and sealed a covenant of loyalty to God (9:38). At the top of the list was the name of Nehemiah, followed by the priests, the Levites, and the people.

The people swore to walk in the Law of the Lord (v. 29). This meant they agreed to be punished through calamities if they did not keep their promise. Their covenant had several stipulations:

–       to avoid mixed marriages with people from other nations (v. 30)

–       to observe the Sabbath Day and the Sabbatical Year

–       to provide financial support – a third of a shekel per year (about 60 grams). These gifts were for the priests and Levites so they could purchase the showbread that was set before the Lord and the sacrifices that had to be brought

–       to bring wood for the fire under the altar for burnt offerings

–       to bring the first fruits of the ground

–       to bring their firstborn and the firstborn of their animals

–       to bring the annual tithe

The Levites gave a tithe from their tithe. They swore an oath not to neglect the House of the Lord.

Upon closer examination, demonstrating faithfulness and obedience to the Laws of the Lord in the Old Testament involved a multitude of things, much effort, and much expense. Love has no limits, but the law does. Therefore, love is the greatest commandment. One who loves needs to do nothing else. A person who loves will be fully focused on doing good for the one he loves.

Standing before the Lord during a time dedicated to prayer, we humbly stop and pray for love. May God fill our hearts with love for the members of our family, for our brothers and sisters in the church, for our enemies, and for absolutely all people. This is the right place to remember the two aspects of the command:

1.     Do not only do good to those who can repay you. This kind of good costs nothing; it is transactional – you give to get back.

2.     The sickest among us needs the doctor the most. The truth is, we are tempted to despise and judge the “very sick.” This is proof of a lack of love, of mercy – “mercy triumphs over judgment.”

Coming to church is easier than being faithful; being faithful is easier than being holy!
