Vineri, 3 februarie 2023, Geneza 31:1-55 – Iacov fuge din Haran

Decizia lui Iacov de a pleca din Haran a avut la bază trei motive:

1) Nemulțumirea și invidia crescândă a fiilor lui Laban care-l acuzau pe Iacov că a furat averea tatălui lor;

2) Starea sufletească și atitudinea lui Laban exprima gelozie și răutate;

3) Dumnezeu i Se descoperă lui Iacov și îi cere să se întoarcă în Canaan.

Iacov obține consimțământul soțiilor lui, ia tot ce este al lui și pleacă fără să-l informeze pe Laban. După trei zile Laban a aflat și, însoțit de un grup de bărbați din familie, au ajuns din urmă familia lui Iacov după șapte zile de călătorie. Cel mai probabil că Iacov s-ar fi întors cu mâine goale în Canaan dacă Dumnezeu nu s-ar fi arătat lui Laban în vis, cerându-i ,,să nu-i spună lui Iacov nicio vorbă rea”.

Ceea ce Iacov nu știa era faptul că Rahela îi furase idolii tatălui său, acesta fiind motivul supărării lui Laban. Conform tablelor de la Nuzi, sec. XV, posedarea idolilor cuiva putea însemna drept la moștenirea acestuia. Nereușind să găsească zeii, Laban a devenit acuzat din acuzator, fiindcă Iacov l-a mustrat pentru atitudinea lui calomnioasă și agresivă. A urmat o împăcare sub protecția unui legământ încheiat între cei doi bărbați și o movilă ridicată ca semn al legământului. Prevederile legământului erau ca Iacov să nu facă rău fiicelor lui Laban și cei doi bărbați vor sta departe unul de celalalt.

Ceea ce este interesant este faptul că Laban a jurat pe ,,Dumnezeul lui Avraam și al lui Nahor”, în timp ce Iacov a jurat pe Dumnezeul ,,de care se teme Isaac”. Aceasta demonstrează faptul că Iacov încă nu se raporta la Dumnezeu ca la Dumnezeul lui personal, ci ca la Dumnezeul tatălui său.

În această dimineață, ne rugăm mulțumind Domnului pentru că deseori, fără ca noi să știm, a spus oamenilor răi, bolilor, dușmanilor… ,,să nu-i spui nici o vorba rea copilui Meu”.  Apoi ne vom ruga Lui, cerând harul de a rămâne credincioși Dumnezeului nostru, nu (doar) Dumnezeului părinților noștri.

Friday, February 3, 2023: Genesis 31:1-55 – Jacob Flees from Haran

Jacob’s decision to leave Haran was based on three reasons:

1) The growing resentment and envy of Laban’s sons who accused Jacob of stealing their father’s wealth.

2) Laban’s state of mind and attitude expressed jealousy and malice.

3) God reveals Himself to Jacob and tells him to return to Canaan.

Jacob obtained the consent of his wives, took all that was his, and departed without informing Laban. After three days Laban found out and, accompanied by a group of men from the family, caught up with Jacob’s family after seven days of travel. Most likely, Jacob would have returned to Canaan empty-handed if God had not appeared to Laban in a dream, asking him “be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad“.

What Jacob did not know was that Rachel had stolen her father’s idols; this was the reason for Laban’s anger. According to the Nuzi tablets from the 15^th century, the possession of someone’s idols could mean a right to his inheritance. Failing to find the gods, Laban became the accuser as Jacob reprimanded him for his slanderous and aggressive attitude. A reconciliation followed under the protection of a covenant made between the two men and a heap of stones was raised as a sign of the covenant. The stipulations of the covenant were that Jacob would not harm Laban’s daughters and the two men would stay away from each other.

What is interesting is that Laban swore by “the God of Abraham and Nahor“, while Jacob swore by the God “whom Isaac fears“. This shows that Jacob still did not relate to God as his personal God, but as the God of his father.

This morning, we pray by thanking God because often, without our knowing, He said to evil people, diseases, enemies… “do not say a bad word to my child“. Then we will pray to Him, asking for the grace to remain faithful to our God, not (only) to the God of our fathers.
