Joi, 3 august 2023, Judecători 2:1-23 – Anunțul îngerului Domnului

Îngerul Domnului s-a suit din Ghilgal la Bichim (v. 1). Aluziile din NT sugerează că Îngerul Domnului din VT a fost Isus Cristos (Ioan 12:41; 1 Corinteni 10:4; Evrei 11:6). Îngerul Domnului a fost, de fapt, o teofanie (arătare fizică a celei de-a doua Persoane din Trinitate). S-a arătat lui Moise (Exod 3:2-15), lui Iosua (Iosua 5:13-15), lui Ghedeon (Judecători 6:1-24) și părinților lui Samson (Judecători 13:3-21). Îngerul Domnului era/este Divinitate pentru că a fost numit `Yehova` (Judecători 6:11-24), `Dumnezeu` (Exod 3:4) și pentru că avea/are prerogative divine (Geneza 18:25).

Ghilgal era aproape de Ierihon și a fost locul unde a fost așezată prima tabără a Israelului după intrarea în Canaan și locul unde bărbații au fost circumciși (Iosua 5:2-12). Îngerul Domnului a vorbit Israelului, repetând interdicția de a crea alianțe cu locuitorii țării (Deuteronom 7:2, 5, 17). El le-a amintit de neascultarea lor, lăsând locuitorii țării să rămână în Canaan. El a întrebat poporul: ,,Pentru ce ați făcut lucrul acesta?”

Păcatul Israelului este remarcat prin expresia: ,,Au părăsit pe Domnul care-i scosese din țara Egiptului și au slujit și s-au închinat altor dumnezei și popoarelor care-i înconjurau” (v. 12). Ei ,,au curvit cu alți dumnezei… s-au abătut de calea pe care o urmaseră părinții lor și n-au ascultat de poruncile Domnului” (v. 17).

Ca o consecință a repetatelor lor neascultări, Dumnezeu Și-a retras ajutorul de care aveau nevoie pentru a alunga locuitorii țării din Canaan (2:20-3:6). Pentru că au nesocotit porunca lui Dumnezeu să nu se căsătorească cu locuitorii țării, au ajuns să tolereze închinarea păgână a acestora și chiar să participe la ea. Această formă de idolatrie a ofensat sfințenia și justiția lui Dumnezeu. Plânsul și pocăința lor nu au fost autentice pentru că nu și-au schimbat stilul de viață neascultător și idolatru.

Dumnezeu a permis canaaniților să rămână în țară pentru câteva motive:

1.     El a hotărât să pedepsească Israelul pentru apostazia întoarcerii la idoli.

2.     I-a lăsat pe canaaniți să locuiască în țară pentru a pune la încercare credincioșia lui Israel.

3.     El i-a lăsat pe canaaniți în țară pentru ca Israelul să devină experimentat în războaie.

4.     I-a lăsat ca să împiedice transformarea țării într-o pustie înainte ca populația Israelului să fie suficient de numeroasă pentru a ocupa țara.   

În rugăciunea care urmează vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru Îngerul Domnului care S-a  întrupat ,,la împlinirea vremii”, devenind Mântuitorul tuturor oamenilor. Apoi vom continua rugăciunea cerând Domnului să ne ajute să nu acceptăm niciodată alianțe cu dușmanii (lumea, diavolul și firea pământească).

Thursday, August 3, 2023: Judges 2:1-23 – The Announcement of the Lord’s Angel 

The Angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim (v. 1). NT allusions suggest that the Angel of the Lord in the OT was Jesus Christ (John 12:41; 1 Corinthians 10:4; Hebrews 11:6). The Angel of the Lord was, in fact, a theophany (a physical manifestation of the second Person of the Trinity). He appeared to Moses (Exodus 3:2-15), Joshua (Joshua 5:13-15), Gideon (Judges 6:1-24), and Samson's parents (Judges 13:3-21). The Angel of the Lord was/is Divinity because He was called “Jehovah” (Judges 6:11-24), “God” (Exodus 3:4), and because He had/has divine prerogatives (Genesis 18:25).

Gilgal was close to Jericho and was the place where the first camp of Israel was set up after their entrance into Canaan and where the men were circumcised (Joshua 5:2-12). The Angel of the Lord spoke to Israel, repeating the prohibition to create alliances with the inhabitants of the land (Deuteronomy 7:2, 5, 17). He reminded them of their disobedience, allowing the inhabitants of the land to remain in Canaan. He asked the people: “Why have you done this?“

Israel's sin is noted by the expression: “They abandoned the Lord who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and served and worshipped other gods and the nations that surrounded them” (v. 12). They “prostituted themselves to other gods… turned from the ways of their ancestor, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands” (v. 17).

Because of their repeated disobedience, God withdrew His aid which they needed to drive out the inhabitants of the land from Canaan (2:20-3:6). Because they disregarded God's command not to marry the inhabitants of the land, they came to tolerate the pagan worship of these people and even participate in it. This form of idolatry offended God's holiness and justice. Their weeping and repentance were not authentic because they did not change their disobedient and idolatrous lifestyle.

God allowed the Canaanites to remain in the land for several reasons:

1.     He decided to punish Israel for their apostasy of returning to idols.

2.     He let the Canaanites live in the land to test Israel's faithfulness.

3.     He left the Canaanites in the land for Israel to become experienced in warfare.

4.     He left them to prevent the land from becoming a wilderness before the population of Israel was numerous enough to occupy the land.

In the following prayer, we will thank God for the Angel of the Lord who incarnated “when the time had fully come“, becoming the Savior of all people. Then we will continue our prayer asking the Lord to help us to never accept alliances with enemies (the world, the devil, and the flesh).
