Joi, 28 decembrie 2023, 1 Cronici 21:1-30 – Recensământul lui David

Scriitorul (cel mai probabil Ezra) remarcă faptul că ,,Satana… l-a ațâțat pe David să facă numărătoarea lui Israel” (v. 1). Scriptură menționază că David a vrut să știe câți bărbați apți de luptă sunt în popor. ,,Ioab a dat lui David cartea numărătorii poporului: În tot Israelul erau o mie de mii și o sută de mii de bărbați în stare să scoată sabia, iar în Iuda erau patru sute șaptezeci de mii de bărbați în stare să scoată sabia” (v. 5).

Este impresionant faptul că Ioab a avut mai mult discernământ cu privire la numărătoarea poporului decât David: ,,Dar pentru ce cere Domnul meu lucrul acesta? Pentru ce să faci pe Israel să păcătuiască astfel? … Între ei n-a numărat și pe Levi și pe Beniamin, căci porunca împăratului i se părea o urâciune.” (v. 3, 5)

Recensământul a durat aproape zece luni. Rezultatul arată că David avea o armată de aproximativ de un milion și șase sute de mii de ostași. Deși scopul lui David a fost să cunoască capacitățile militare, la încheierea recensământului, David a conștientizat păcatul mândriei (v. 8). Dumnezeu i-a oferit posibilitatea să aleagă o pedeapsă dintre trei posibile:

1)    șapte ani de foamete,

2)    trei luni de fugă dinaintea vrăjmașului sau

3)    ciumă timp de trei zile în țară.

David a ales a treia opțiune, preferând să cadă în mâinile Domnului. Ciuma a omorât șaptezeci de mii de oameni. David a zidit un altar Domnului, și-a cerut iertare și a implorat milă peste oamenii care mureau nevinovați.

Got i-a spus că altarul trebuie zidit în aria lui Aravna, care se pare că era pe Muntele Moria. Când proprietarul a aflat că împăratul vrea să cumpere terenul, a fost dispus să îl dea fără bani, ba chiar să-i dea lemne și tot ce mai avea nevoie (v. 22). David a avut o atitudine demnă care se constituie într-o lecție de viață pentru noi: ,,…nu voi aduce Domnului Dumnezeului meu arderi de tot care să nu mă coste nimic.” (v. 24)

Mai târziu, pe acest loc, pe muntele Moria unde Avraam a fost chemat să aducă jertfa pe fiul său, Isaac (Geneza 22:2-14), Solomon a construit Templul din Ierusalim.

Fiind timpul rugăciunii, vom mulțumi Domnului pentru situațiile în care ne-a disciplinat, învățându-ne în felul acesta că Legile lui Dumnezeu nu sunt negociabile. Apoi, ne vom ruga Domnului să putem învige ispita de a ne mândri, de a ieși în evidență, de a contabiliza puterea, de a folosi comparația pentru a pune în evidență performanța.

Thursday, December 28, 2023: 1 Chronicles 21:1-30 – David's Census

The writer (most likely Ezra) notes that “Satan… incited David to take a census of Israel” (v. 1). Scripture mentions that David wanted to know how many able-bodied men were in the nation. “Joab reported the number of the people to David: In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could draw the sword, and in Judah, four hundred seventy thousand men who could draw the sword” (v. 5).

It is impressive that Joab had more discernment regarding the census than David: “But why does my lord the king desire this thing? Why should he cause Israel to sin in this way? … He did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count, for the king's command was repulsive to him.” (v. 3, 5)

The census took almost ten months. The result showed that David had an army of approximately one million six hundred thousand soldiers. Although David's purpose was to know the military capabilities, at the end of the census, David realized his sin of pride (v. 8). God offered him the choice of one of three punishments:

1.     seven years of famine,

2.     three months of fleeing before the enemy, or

3.     three days of plague in the land.

David chose the third option, preferring to fall into the hands of the Lord. The plague killed seventy thousand people. David built an altar to the Lord, asked for forgiveness, and pleaded for mercy over the innocent people dying.

God told him that the altar should be built on the threshing floor of Araunah, which appears to have been on Mount Moriah. When the owner learned that the king wanted to buy the land, he was willing to give it for free, even offering wood and everything else needed (v. 22). David had a dignified attitude that serves as a life lesson for us: “…I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.” (v. 24)

Later, on this site at Mount Moriah where Abraham was called to sacrifice his son Isaac (Genesis 22:2-14), Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem.

As it is time for prayer, we will thank the Lord for the situations in which He has disciplined us, thereby teaching us that God's Laws are not negotiable. Then, we will pray to the Lord to help us overcome the temptation of pride, of seeking prominence, of counting power, and of using comparison to highlight performance.
