Miercuri, 27 decembrie 2023, 1 Cronici 20:1-8 – Cucerirea cetății Raba

În anul următor, generalul Ioab, însoțit de oameni viteji, a cucerit Raba și i-a învins pe amoniți. Este imposibil să nu remarcăm faptul că Israel a avut o viață zbuciumată, plină de războaie. Biblia explică în mod repetat că multe dintre toate aceste războaie au fost o pedeapsă a lui Dumnezeu pentru idolatria în care Israel a trăit.

,,Copiii lui Israel au făcut iarăşi ce nu plăcea Domnului, şi Domnul i-a dat în mâinile filistenilor timp de patruzeci de ani.” (Judecatori 13:1)

,,Domnul S-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Israel şi i-a dat în mâinile lui Hazael, împăratul Siriei, şi în mâinile lui Ben-Hadad, fiul lui Hazael, tot timpul cât au trăit împăraţii aceştia.” (2 Regi 13:3) 

,,Domnul a lepădat tot neamul lui Israel; i-a smerit, i-a dat în mâinile jefuitorilor şi a sfârşit prin a-i izgoni dinaintea Feţei Lui.” (2 Regi 17:20) 

În anul în care generalul Ioab a plecat cu armata la război, David a rămas la Ierusalim, însă Cartea Cronici omite să prezinte adulterul regelui cu Baat Șeba și uciderea lui Urie care au avut loc în această perioadă. ,,În anul următor, pe vremea când porneau împăraţii la război, David a trimis pe Ioab, cu slujitorii lui şi tot Israelul, să pustiască ţara lui Amon şi să împresoare Raba. Dar David a rămas la Ierusalim. Într-o după amiază spre seară, David s-a sculat de pe pat; şi pe când se plimba pe acoperişul casei împărăteşti, a zărit de acolo o femeie care se scălda şi care era foarte frumoasă la chip. David a întrebat cine este femeia aceasta, şi i-au spus: „Este Bat-Şeba, fata lui Eliam, nevasta lui Urie, hetitul.” (2 Samuel 11:1-3)

Cel mai probabil că scriitorul a avut intenția să sublinieze aspectele pozitive ale domniei lui David. Având lecțiile de viață ale poporului evreu cu idolatria și ale regelui David cu adulterul, conștientizăm cât de repede și de ieftin își vând oamenii uneori sufletul.

Îi mulțumim lui Dumnezeu pentru că, în harul Său, ne-a păzit sufletele de cădere. Apoi,vom privi cu uimire la Israel care, de când a ieșit din Egipt, a fost un popor neloial, un popor răsfățat, pretențios, nemulțumit, mânios, predispus să practice stilul de închinare păgân al popoarelor pe care le-a întâlnit. Să ne rugăm pentru loialitate, fidelitate și credincioșie.

Wednesday, December 27, 2023: 1 Chronicles 20:1-8 – The Conquest of Rabbah

The following year, General Joab, accompanied by brave men, conquered Rabbah and defeated the Ammonites. It's impossible not to notice that Israel had a tumultuous life, full of wars. The Bible repeatedly explains that many of these wars were God's punishment for the idolatry in which Israel lived.

“The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.” (Judges 6:1)

“The Lord's anger burned against Israel so that he sold them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim, to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years.” (Judges 3:8)

“The Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel. He afflicted them and gave them into the hands of plunderers, until he thrust them from his presence.” (2 Kings 17:20)

In the year when General Joab went to war, David stayed in Jerusalem. However, the Book of Chronicles omits to present the king's adultery with Bathsheba and the killing of Uriah, which occurred during this period. “In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, 'She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.'” (2 Samuel 11:1-3)

Most likely, the writer intended to highlight the positive aspects of David's reign. With the life lessons of the Jewish people with idolatry and King David with adultery, we realize how quickly and cheaply people sometimes sell their souls.

We thank God for, in His grace, keeping our souls from falling. Then, we will look with amazement at Israel, which, since leaving Egypt, had been a disloyal people, spoiled, demanding, dissatisfied, angry, prone to practice the pagan worship style of the nations it encountered. Let us pray for loyalty, fidelity, and faithfulness.
