Miercuri, 27 septembrie 2023 1 Samuel 31:1-13 – Israelienii învinși de filisteni

Filistenii s-au luptat cu Israel și Muntele Ghilboa a fost martorul unei dureroase înfrângeri a iudeilor. Au fost uciși și cei trei fii ai lui Saul: Ionatan, Ionadam și Malchisua. Saul a fost rănit mortal și, temându-se că va fi găsit de filisteni și torturat, și-a luat singur viața. Purtătorul său de arme care era foarte speriat a urmat exemplul stăpânului său.

În semn de batjocură, filistenii au tăiat capul lui Saul și i-au atârnat trupul pe zidurile Bet-Sanului, răzbunând în felul acesta pe eroul lor, Goliat. Când au auzit vitejii Iabesului din Galaad, au mers și au luat trupurile lui Saul și ale fiilor lui de pe ziduri, le-au adus în Iabeș și le-au ars. Oasele le-au îngropat sub stejarul din Iabeș și au postit șapte zile înaintea Domnului.

Acești bărbați viteji nu au uitat când Saul i-a salvat de Nahas amonitul la începutul domniei sale (11:1-11). Actul lor de curaj și recunoștința rămâne peste veacuri o amintire a mulțumirii și demnității.

De partea cealaltă, Saul a suportat consecințele neascultării lui, moartea sa simbolizând sfârșitul tragic al celui care a respins poruncile lui Dumnezeu. Saul a primit porunca să distrugă poporul amalecit, însă el l-a cruțat pe regele lor, Agag, împreună cu toate turmele și cirezile lui (15:9, 15). Saul nu a avut puterea să se pocăiască de neascultare. Dimpotrivă, era mai preocupat de onoarea sa decât de relația spirituală personală cu Dumnezeu (15:30).

Acest capitol prezintă o imagine tragică, dar educativă, care le reamintește credincioșilor că favoarea lui Dumnezeu nu este un drept, ci un dar plin de har, care poate fi pierdut prin răzvrătire persistentă și neascultare (1 Samuel 15:23).

Este din nou timpul rugăciunii. Vom sta înaintea Domnului, mulțumindu-I pentru șansele pe care ni le oferă atunci când eșuăm în împlinirea poruncilor sale. Apoi, ne vom ruga Domnului să ne păstreze credincioși și ascultători. Vom cere Domnului puterea să cultivăm frica de Domnul și smerenia. De asemenea, ne vom ruga să ne putem pocăi în mod sincer, autentic, ori de câte ori în nevegherea noastră Îl întristăm pe Dumnezeu.

Wednesday, September 27, 2023: 1 Samuel 31:1-13 – The Israelites Defeated by the Philistines

The Philistines fought against Israel, and Mount Gilboa bore witness to a painful defeat for the Jews. Saul's three sons: Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-Shua were killed. Saul was mortally wounded and, fearing that he would be found and tortured by the Philistines, took his own life. His armor-bearer, immensely terrified, followed his master's example.

In mockery, the Philistines beheaded Saul and hung his body on the walls of Beth Shan, thereby avenging their hero, Goliath. When the valiant men of Jabesh Gilead heard about this, they went and took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall, brought them to Jabesh, and burned them. They buried their bones under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and fasted seven days before the Lord.

These brave men remembered when Saul had saved them from Nahash the Ammonite at the beginning of his reign (11:1-11). Their act of courage and gratitude remains through the ages as a memory of gratitude and dignity.

On the other hand, Saul bore the consequences of his disobedience, his death symbolizing the tragic end of one who rejected God's commands. Saul was commanded to exterminate the Amalekites, but he spared their king, Agag, along with all his flocks and herds (15:9, 15). Saul lacked the strength to repent for his disobedience. Instead, he was more concerned about his honor than his personal spiritual relationship with God (15:30).

This chapter provides a tragic but instructive image, reminding believers that God's favor is not a right but a grace-filled gift, which can be lost through persistent rebellion and disobedience (1 Samuel 15:23).

It is once again time for prayer. We will stand before the Lord, thanking Him for the chances He offers us when we fail in fulfilling His commands. Then, we will pray to the Lord to keep us faithful and obedient. We'll ask for the strength to cultivate the fear of the Lord and for humility. Moreover, we will pray that we can sincerely and authentically repent whenever in our carelessness we grieve God.
