Împăratul lui Iuda, Ezechia, fiul lui Ahaz, domnește 29 de ani, 715-686 î. Cr., și este considerat unul dintre împărații buni: „El şi-a pus încrederea în Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel; şi, dintre toţi împăraţii lui Iuda care au venit după el sau care au fost înainte de el, n-a fost niciunul ca el. El s-a alipit de Domnul, nu s-a abătut de la El şi a păzit poruncile pe care le dăduse lui Moise Domnul. Şi Domnul a fost cu Ezechia, care a izbutit în tot ce a făcut.” (2 Împărați 18:5-7a)

Primind o scrisoare de amenințare din partea împăratului Asiriei, regele Ezechia s-a speriat: „Când a auzit împăratul Ezechia cuvintele acestea, şi-a sfâşiat hainele, s-a acoperit cu un sac şi s-a dus în Casa Domnului.” (vers. 1)

A trimis slujitorii săi de încredere să meargă la profetul Isaia în speranța că Dumnezeu îl va învăța ce să facă: „A trimis pe Eliachim, căpetenia casei împăratului, pe Şebna, logofătul, şi pe cei mai bătrâni dintre preoţi, acoperiţi cu saci, la prorocul Isaia, fiul lui Amoţ.” (vers. 2)

Apoi, regele Ezechia a mers înaintea Domnului cu scrisoarea în mână și s-a rugat cerând ajutorul (vers. 14-15, 17). La porunca lui Dumnezeu, îngerul Domnului a ucis o sută optzeci și cinci de mii de asirieni (vers. 36). Sanherib, îngrozit, și-a ridicat tabăra și s-a dus la Ninive cu toți cei rămași în viață. Potrivit mesajului profetic transmis de Dumnezeu prin Isaia, regele asirian Sanherib a fost ucis de doi dintre fiii săi, Adramalec şi Şareţer.

Iuda (Regatul de Sud) nu ar fi avut nicio șansă să scape cu viață din calea puternicei armate asiriene, după cum nu a scăpat Israel (Regatul de Nord), care a fost distrus de asirieni în anul 720 î. Cr.

Se confirmă încă o dată faptul că Dumnezeu îi scapă pe cei ce se pocăiesc și Îi cer ajutorul. Generația noastră nu mai este amenințată de armata Asiriei, însă este amenințată de mulți dușmani.

Să ne rugăm lui Dumnezeu pentru înțelepciune, călăuzire și protecție, știind că pe cine apără Dumnezeu va fi apărat.

The king of Judah, Hezekiah, son of Ahaz, reigned for 29 years, from 715-686 BC, and is considered one of the good kings: “He trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. He held fast to the Lord and did not stop following him; he kept the commands the Lord had given Moses. And the Lord was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook.” (2 Kings 18:5-7a, NIV)

Upon receiving a threatening letter from the king of Assyria, King Hezekiah became fearful: “When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord.” (v. 1, NIV)

He sent his trusted servants to the prophet Isaiah, hoping that God would instruct him on what to do: “He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.” (v. 2, NIV)

Then King Hezekiah went before the Lord with the letter in hand and prayed, asking for help (v. 14-15, 17). At God’s command, the angel of the Lord struck down one hundred eighty-five thousand Assyrians (v. 36). Terrified, Sennacherib broke camp and returned to Nineveh with those who survived. According to the prophetic message God had given through Isaiah, the Assyrian king Sennacherib was later killed by two of his sons, Adrammelek and Sharezer.

Judah (the Southern Kingdom) had no chance of surviving the powerful Assyrian army, just as Israel (the Northern Kingdom) had fallen and been destroyed by the Assyrians in 720 BC.

Once again, it is confirmed that God rescues those who repent and call on Him for help. Our generation may no longer face the Assyrian army, but we are threatened by many enemies.
