Joi, 24 august 2023, Rut 2:1-23 – Rut îl întâlnește pe Boaz

Cartea Rut trebuie înțeleasă în contextul evenimentelor istorice cuprinse în cărțile Iosua și Judecători. Ideea de bază a cărții Iosua este: „Biruință prin credință“. Ideea cărții Judecători ar putea fi: „Înfrângeri prin compromisuri“.

Legea în Israel avea prevederi pentru cei săraci și lipsiți, permițându-i-le să adune de pe câmp ce cădea sau ce rămânea în urma recoltării. Colțurile câmpului trebuiau să fie lăsate nerecoltate pentru ca săracii să strângă recolta (Leviticul 19:9-10).

Boaz (,,în El este puterea”), un om bogat și cu vază din Betleem (care tradus înseamnă „casa pâinii“), era rudă cu Elimelec, soțul lui Naomi. Rut a mers pe proprietatea lui Boaz să strângă spice de grâu și Boaz a avut ocazia să o vadă, să o cunoască și să fie impresionat de hărnicia și atitudinea ei față de Naomi. Boaz era un om echilibrat și generos, iar Rut era o femei harnică și smerită.

În felul acesta, Naomi a avut belșug în casa ei, iar Rut și-a construit reputația unei femei de treabă, trezind interesul celor din jur. Ea nu a pretins nimic; ea doar a fost harnică, smerită și politicoasă. Boaz, fiind rudă cu Naomi, avea drept de răscumpărare asupra ei, a familiei și a proprietăților. Rolul rudei cu drept de răscumpărare era să ajute la recuperarea pierderilor familiei lărgite. Boaz putea răscumpăra prin aplicarea legii leviratului, care cerea ca fratele unui bărbat decedat să ia în căsătorie văduva fratelui său pentru ca fratele decedat să aibă un fiu care să-i poarte numele, iar familia lui să aibă susținere (Deuteronom 25:5-10).

Boaz nu era fratele lui Mahlon, soțul decedat al lui Rut, însă era rudă apropiată a familiei și putea deveni levir (cuvântul latin pentru cumnat). Caracterul lui Rut a strălucit și mai mult atunci când a ascultat de Naomi, acceptând cu bucurie și respect sugestiile acesteia.  

Este dimineață și avem oportunitatea unui timp devoțiune pentru suflet. Începem prin a mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru că întotdeauna trimite oameni în viața noastră prin care urmează să ne binecuvânteze. Apoi, vom continua rugăciunea cerând de la Dumnezeu înțelepciune, echilibru și smerenie. Aceste virtuți ne transformă în niște oameni plăcuți, agreabili și ușor de iubit.

Thursday, August 24, 2023: Ruth 2:1-23 – Ruth meets Boaz

The Book of Ruth should be understood in the context of the historical events covered in the books of Joshua and Judges. The underlying theme of the Book of Joshua is: “Victory through Faith.” The theme of the Book of Judges could be: “Defeat through Compromise.”

The law in Israel made provisions for the poor and destitute, allowing them to gather what fell or remained in the fields after harvesting. The corners of the field were to be left unharvested for the poor to gather crops (Leviticus 19:9-10).

Boaz (“Strength is in Him“), a wealthy and esteemed man from Bethlehem (which translates to “house of bread“), was a relative of Elimelech, Naomi's husband. Ruth went to Boaz's property to gather wheat spikes, and Boaz had the opportunity to see her, get to know her, and be impressed by her diligence and her attitude towards Naomi. Boaz was a balanced and generous man, and Ruth was a hardworking and humble woman.

In this way, Naomi had abundance in her home, and Ruth built her reputation as a diligent woman, arousing the interest of those around her. She didn't claim anything; she was just diligent, humble, and polite. Boaz, being related to Naomi, had the right of redemption over her, her family, and their properties. The role of the guardian-redeemer was to help recover the extended family's losses. Boaz could redeem by applying the law of levirate marriage, which required the brother of a deceased man to marry the widow of his brother so that the deceased would have a son to carry on his name, and his family would have support (Deuteronomy 25:5-10).

Boaz was not the brother of Mahlon, Ruth's deceased husband, but he was a close relative of the family and could become the levir (the Latin word for brother-in-law). Ruth's character shone even brighter when she heeded Naomi, gladly and respectfully accepting her suggestions.

It is morning, and we have the opportunity for soul devotion. We begin by thanking God for always sending people into our lives through whom He intends to bless us. Then, we will continue our prayer asking God for wisdom, balance, and humility. These virtues transform us into pleasant, agreeable, and easily loved individuals.
