Joi, 23 noiembrie 2023, 2 Regi 11:1-21 – Atalia, Iehoiada și Ioas

Scena monarhiei evreiești este îmbibată de tensiune și frământări. Fiind un popor al lui Dumnezeu, Israelul este evaluat prin prisma sfințeniei lui. Orice soi de competențe se subordonează acestui mare deziderat: SFINȚENIA.

Evreii au avut în ultima perioadă de 400 de ani, 39 de regi: 20 în Regatul de Sud (Iuda) și 19 în Regatul de Nord (Israel). Atalia a fost singura regină din Iuda și a domnit 6 ani la Ierusalim. A fost o femeie idolatră care se închina în cultul lui Baal, deși întreaga ei viață a trăit printre regii vremii. Ea a fost fiica lui Ahab și Izabela, fiind soră cu Ahazia și Ioram. De asemenea, a fost mama împăratului Ahazia pe care l-a ucis regele Iehu. Atalia a fost soția împăratului Ioram din Iuda. Fiind o femeie oportunistă și fără frică de Dumnezeu, a exploatat un moment de slăbiciune al monarhiei din Iuda, a ucis pe toți nepoții ei care erau pretendenți la tron, și a devenit regină pe tronul lui Iuda.

Ioseba, soția Marelui Preot, a fost fiica lui Ioram, soțul Ataliei. Ioseba l-a luat pe micuțul Ioas când avea vârsta de un an, l-a îngrijit și l-a ținut ascuns în Casa Domnului în perioada celor 6 ani de domniei ai Ataliei. În cel de-al 7-lea an al domniei ei, Iehoiada a convocat căpeteniile militare din Iuda, l-a prezentat pe Ioas, care avea 7 ani, drept moștenitor legitim al tronului și au organizat încoronarea acestuia.

După ce a instruit soldații și gărzile Templului, Iehoiada l-a scos pe Ioas în Curtea Templu, locul de unde regele se adresa poporului (2 Cronici 23:13). L-a așezat pe tron și l-a proclamat împărat în Iuda.

Atalia, auzind strigăte și atmosferă de sărbătoare, a venit la Casa Domnului și, văzând ce se întâmplă, și-a sfâșiat hainele și a strigat disperată: ,,Trădare, trădare” (vers. 14). Nefiind o moștenitoare legitimă pentru că nu se trăgea din David, Iehoiada a poruncit să fie scoasă din perimetrul Templului și să fie ucisă lângă Poarta Cailor. Probabil Atalia a fost cea mai rea femeie din Scriptură, după Izabela. 

Fiind un timp convențional de rugăciune, ne vom smeri în fața Creatorului și Îi vom mulțumi pentru Scripturi. În această Carte este descris drumul spre cer. Prin această Carte Dumnezeu ne mângâie și ne încurajează. Știm despre Dumnezeu ceea ce știm pentru că Biblia ne învață. Vom continua rugăciunea, cerând Domnului puterea să trăim în abstinență față de păcat.

Thursday, November 23, 2023: 2 Kings 11:1-21 – Athaliah, Jehoiada, and Joash

The scene of the Jewish monarchy is saturated with tension and turmoil. As a people of God, Israel is assessed through the prism of His holiness. Any kind of competency is subordinate to this great aspiration: HOLINESS.

In a period of 400 years, the Jews had 39 kings: 20 in the Southern Kingdom (Judah) and 19 in the Northern Kingdom (Israel). Athaliah was the only queen of Judah and reigned for 6 years in Jerusalem. She was an idolatrous woman who worshiped in the cult of Baal, although she lived her entire life among the kings of her time. She was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, sister to Ahaziah and Joram, and also the mother of King Ahaziah whom King Jehu killed. Athaliah was the wife of King Joram of Judah. Being an opportunistic woman without fear of God, she exploited a moment of weakness in the monarchy of Judah, killed all her grandchildren who were heirs to the throne, and became queen on the throne of Judah.

Jehosheba, the wife of the High Priest, was the daughter of Joram, Athaliah's husband. Jehosheba took the young Joash when he was one year old, cared for him, and kept him hidden in the House of the Lord during Athaliah's 6 years of reign. In the 7th year of her reign, Jehoiada summoned the military leaders of Judah, presented Joash, who was 7 years old, as the legitimate heir to the throne, and they organized his coronation.

After instructing the soldiers and temple guards, Jehoiada brought Joash out to the Temple Court, the place from where the king addressed the people (2 Chronicles 23:13). He placed him on the throne and proclaimed him king in Judah.

Athaliah, hearing the shouts and festive atmosphere, came to the House of the Lord and, seeing what was happening, tore her clothes and cried out in desperation: “Treason, treason” (verse 14). Not being a legitimate heir because she was not descended from David, Jehoiada ordered her to be taken out of the Temple precinct and to be killed by the Horse Gate. Athaliah was an extremely evil woman in Scripture, second only to Jezebel.

In this conventional time of prayer, we will humble ourselves before the Creator and thank Him for the Scriptures. This Book describes the path to heaven. Through this Book, God comforts and encourages us. We know what we know about God because the Bible teaches us. We will continue in prayer, asking the Lord for the strength to live in abstinence of sin.
