Monday, May 22, 2023: Numbers 23:7-26 – Balaam’s First Two Prophecies

Balaam was a mysterious character, and the Bible dedicates three chapters in the book of Numbers to present him. Balaam was not a Jew, and the city he lived in was called Pethor (Deuteronomy 23:4). He had the ability to predict the future using occult powers for blessings and curses. The Apostle Peter mentions that he did this for money (2 Peter 2:15).

Balaam’s first prophecy was spoken on Mount Bamoth-Baal (7-12). Balaam asked Balak to build seven altars where seven calves and seven rams would be sacrificed. Balaam's prophecy consisted of a brief presentation of how he got there and what he was asked to do. Then he rhetorically asked if it was possible to curse what God has blessed (v. 8; Genesis 12:1-3). Balaam said ” I see a people who live apart and do not consider themselves one of the nations” (23:8-10). Balak was dissatisfied that the prophet did not curse Israel.

The second prophecy (13-26) is spoken from the top of Mount Pisgah. At Balaam's request, seven altars were also built here, on which seven calves and seven rams were sacrificed. Balaam told Balak that God would not curse the Jewish people because He sees “no misfortune…or misery is seen in Israel” (23:21). Did the God who has eyes like “fiery flames” truly not see any wickedness in Israel? Yes, He did. He saw every iniquity, but He did not believe it was necessary to say this in Balak's presence, who intended to destroy God's people.

Witchcraft and sorcery” (v. 23) would have no influence on the people because God was their “strength.” Being greatly disappointed, King Balak asked the prophet to at least not bless the people if he couldn't curse them. Balaam told him that he could only say what God had instructed him to say. Although he was a pagan, Balak knew that the greatest harm for an individual, a family, or a nation is the withdrawal of God's blessing.

As we wake up to a new morning, we will thank God for His blessings – for protecting us from Satan and giving us victory every day. We begin this day with full confidence that God is with us. Then, we will pray to Him, asking for His protection and guidance over us, our home, and His House.
