Joi, 22 iunie 2023, Deuteronom 19:1-21 – Legea crimei și cetățile de scăpare

În dreptatea Sa, Dumnezeu poruncește să existe cetăți de scăpare în toate regiunile țării, pentru ca ucigașul să primească azil și să fie protejat de răzbunătorul sângelui. Ucigașul putea fi doar persoana care a luat viața cuiva fără aprobarea legii, adică neintenționat, accidental. Aici era vorba doar de persoana care a omorât fără voie pe aproapele său, fără să-i fi fost vrăjmaș înainte (v. 4). Numai genul acesta de ucigaș era primit în cetatea de scăpare. Cetatea de scăpare nu primea niciodată un criminal. Criminalul trebuia trimis în cetatea unde locuia pentru a fi omorât de răzbunătorul sângelui – ,,ochi pentru ochi”.

Dacă poporul dorea să rămână sub binecuvântarea lui Dumnezeu, nu putea să arate milă față de un criminal. Nedreptatea trebuia îndepărtată din popor sau Dumnezeu Se îndepărta de poporul acela. Uneori oamenii sunt tentați să expună sau să apere pe cel vinovat în funcție de intensitatea prieteniei sau a gradului de rudenie, nu în funcție de adevăr. De fapt, nici nu au intenția să cunoască adevărul, să întrebe martorii, să cunoască realitatea. Cât de mare trebuie să fie mânia lui Dumnezeu în astfel de situații!

Moise a prezentat principiul potrivit căruia un singur martor nu era suficient pentru a inculpa pe cineva, pentru a dovedi o nelegiuire. Principiul acesta avea rolul de a preveni mărturiile mincinoase și condamnarea pe nedrept.

Dumnezeu urăște silnicia. Răzbunătorul sângelui era un fel de protector, rudă apropiată, un reprezentant al familiei din care a fost ucis cineva. Bătrânii cetății de scăpare aveau responsabilitatea și autoritatea să-l protejeze pe ucigaș în cetatea de scăpare față de răzbunătorul sângelui (Numeri 35:25). Prezența acestor cetăți punea în evidență cât de importante sunt pentru Dumnezeu viața și dreptatea. Chiar dacă ucigașul își omoară aproapele accidental, el trebuia să stea în cetatea de scăpare un timp foarte îndelungat, până se potolea mânia răzbunătorului sângelui. 

Dumnezeu are o pasiune infinită și eternă pentru dreptate și în egală măsură pentru dragoste! În rugăciunea acestei dimineți Îi mulțumim pentru dreptatea care ne apără și pentru dragostea care ne scapă. Apoi ne vom ruga Domnului să ne dea puterea să-i iertăm pe ,,ucigași”. Cetățile de scăpare s-au desființat și s-a înființat iertarea din dragoste. Scriptura ne avertizează că în vremurile din urmă dragostea celor mai mulți se va răci. Să ne păstreze Dumnezeu dragostea de frați fierbinte și să ne dea putere să ne iubim și dușmanii. Atunci Îl vom aștepta liniștiți pe Cristos să revină.

Thursday, June 22, 2023, Deuteronomy 19:1-21 – The Law of Murder and Cities of Refuge

In His righteousness, God commands that there be cities of refuge in all regions of the country, so that a killer could receive asylum and be protected from an avenger of blood. A killer could only be a person who took someone's life without the approval of the law, that is, unintentionally, accidentally. This referred only to the person who killed his neighbor without premeditation, without having been his enemy before (v. 4). Only this kind of killer was received in the city of refuge. The city of refuge never received a criminal. The criminal had to be sent to his own city where he lived, to be killed by the avenger of blood – “an eye for an eye.”

If the people wanted to remain under God's blessing, they could not show mercy to a criminal. Injustice had to be removed from the people, or God would move away from the people. Sometimes people are tempted to expose or defend the guilty based on the intensity of friendship or the degree of kinship, not based on the truth. In fact, they do not even intend to know the truth, to ask the witnesses, to know the reality. How great God's anger must be in such situations!

Moses presented the principle that a single witness was not sufficient to accuse someone, to prove wrongdoing. This principle was intended to prevent false testimonies and unjust condemnation.

God hates violence. The avenger of blood was a kind of protector, a close relative, a representative of the family from which someone was killed. The elders of the city of refuge had the responsibility and authority to protect the killer in the city of refuge from the avenger of blood (Numbers 35:25). The presence of these cities highlighted how important life and justice are to God. Even if the killer accidentally killed his neighbor, he had to stay in the city of refuge for a very long time, until the anger of the avenger of blood subsided.

God has an infinite and eternal passion for justice and the same kind of passion for love! In this morning's prayer, we thank Him for the justice that protects us and the love that saves us. Then we will pray to the Lord to give us the strength to forgive the “killers”. The cities of refuge have been abolished and forgiveness out of love has been established. Scripture warns us that in the last times the love of many will grow cold. May God keep our brotherly love warm and give us the strength to love our enemies as well. Then we will peacefully wait for Christ to return.
