Acest eveniment a avut loc în perioada în care David se pregătea să-i încredințeze lui Solomon proiectul construcției Templului. Din motive nemenționate, ,,Domnul S-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Israel” (vers. 1).

De asemenea, Dumnezeu l-a făcut pe David să dispună realizarea unui recensământ. În textul paralel din 1 Cronici 21, Satana este prezentat ca un provocator pentru David. Cel mai probabil că este o situație similară cu cea din cartea Iov.

Care a fost motivul pentru care David a vrut neapărat să știe în mod concret cât de mare este capacitatea lui militară? Strategia și viziunea unui lider? Mândria unei armate mari și bine organizate?

Recensământul a durat aproape zece luni. În Israel au fost numărați 800.000 de oameni de război și în Iuda 500.000 de bărbați. Textul paralel din 1 Cronici 21 arată cifre mai mari: 1.100.000 în Israel și 470.000 în Iuda. Diferențele acestea se pot explica prin faptul că în Cronici au fost adăugați și soldații armatei regulare, 12 unități de câte 24.000 de soldați. Aceasta înseamnă 288.000.

La încheierea recensământului, David a conștientizat păcatul mândriei. Dumnezeu i-a oferit posibilitatea să aleagă o pedeapsă dintre trei posibile: (1) șapte ani de foamete, (2) trei luni de fugă dinaintea vrășmașului sau (3) ciumă timp de trei zile în țară.

David a ales a treia opțiune, preferând să cadă în mâinile Domnului. Ciuma a omorât șaptezeci de mii de oameni. David a zidit un altar Domnului, și-a cerut iertare și a implorat milă peste oamenii care mureau nevinovați.

Gad i-a spus că altarul trebuie zidit în aria lui Aravna, care se pare că era pe Muntele Moria. Când proprietarul a aflat că împăratul vrea să cumpere terenul, a fost dispus să îl dea fără bani, ba chiar să-i dea lemne și tot ce mai avea nevoie (vers. 22). David a avut o atitudine care se constituie într-o lecție de viață pentru noi: ,,…nu voi aduce Domnului Dumnezeului meu arderi de tot care să nu mă coste nimic” (vers. 24).

Mai târziu, pe acest loc, Solomon a construit Templul din Ierusalim. Fiecare la vremea lui, fiecare cu lucrarea lui, fiecare cu harul lui.

Care este timpul nostru? Care este lucrarea noastră? Care este harul nostru? Sfredelitoare sunt aceste întrebări, însă le vom mai auzi cel puțin încă o dată – la judecata de apoi.

Vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru că are o lucrare pentru fiecare copil al Său. Apoi să ne rugăm pentru o slujire asemănătoare slujirii lui David – ,,slujirea trebuie să mă coste”. Dumnezeu știe, cunoaște toate lucrurile, iar la sfârșit aceste lucruri vor fi tot ceea ce contează cu adevărat!

This event took place during the time David was preparing to entrust Solomon with the project of building the Temple. For unmentioned reasons, “The Lord was angry with Israel” (verse 1).

Furthermore, God prompted David to conduct a census. In the parallel text in 1 Chronicles 21, Satan is portrayed as a tempter for David. This situation is likely similar to the one in the Book of Job.

What was the reason David wanted to know exactly the extent of his military capability? Was it the strategy and vision of a leader? The pride of a large and well-organized army?

The census lasted almost ten months. In Israel, 800,000 military men were counted and in Judah 500,000 men. The parallel text in 1 Chronicles 21 shows larger figures: 1,100,000 in Israel and 470,000 in Judah. These differences can be explained by the fact that in Chronicles, regular army soldiers were added, 12 units of 24,000 soldiers each. This totals 288,000.

At the end of the census, David recognized the sin of pride. God offered him a choice of one of three possible punishments: (1) seven years of famine, (2) three months of fleeing from the enemy, or (3) a plague lasting three days in the country.

David chose the third option, preferring to fall into the hands of the Lord. The plague killed seventy thousand people. David built an altar to the Lord, sought forgiveness, and pleaded for mercy for the innocent dying people.

Gad told David that the altar should be built in Aravna's threshing floor, which seemed to be on Mount Moriah. When the owner learned that the king wanted to buy the land, he was willing to give it away for free, even providing the wood and everything else needed (verse 22). David had an attitude that serves as a life lesson for us: “… I will not offer to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing” (verse 24).

Later, Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem on this site. Each in his own time, each with his own work, each with his own grace.

What is our time? What is our work? What is our grace? These questions are probing, but we will hear them at least once more – at the final judgment.

We will thank God for giving a task to each of His children. Then we will pray for a service similar to David's service – “the service must cost me“. God knows, He understands all things, and in the end, these things will be all that truly matters!
