Sâmbătă, 2 septembrie 2023, 1 Samuel 6:1-21 – Filistenii trimit chivotul înapoi evreilor

Devenind convinși de puterea supranaturală a Dumnezeului evreilor, filistenii au hotărât să trimită chivotul în Israel, însă însoțit de multe daruri: cinci umflături din aur și cinci șoareci din aur, câte o pereche pentru fiecare dintre cele cinci cetăți filistene. Neștiind protocolul transportării chivotului, l-au pus într-un car nou.

Israelienii s-au bucurat nespus să vadă chivotul legământului în țară, după o absență de 7 luni (v. 1). Au adus ca jertfă vacile care au tras carul în localitatea Bat-Semes. Din curiozitate, locuitorii din Bat-Semes au ridicat capacul chivotului și, împotriva legii divine, s-au uitat în chivot. Regulamentul divin menționa că numai leviții pot transporta și atinge chivotul. Pedeapsa lui Dumnezeu a venit peste ei și în ziua aceea 70 de oameni au murit (v. 19). Îngroziți, locuitorii din Bat-Semes au trims chivotul la Chiriat-Iarim, deși locul lui era la Silo. Chivotul a rămas în casa lui Abinadab timp de aproximativ 100 de ani (7:1).

Fiind timpul rugăciunii, să-I mulțumim lui Dumnezeu că ne-a dat Scriptura în care putem decoperi voia Sa ,,cea bună, plăcută și desăvârșită”. Experiența înfrângerii evreilor de către filisteni în timp ce aveau chivotul la ei i-a învățat că prezența chivotului în absența lui Dumnezeu nu-i poate proteja. Și noi astăzi suntem tentați să ne ,,agățăm” de Casa Domnului, de Cartea Domnului, de oamenii Domnului, dar nu de DOMNUL. Nu lucrurile Domnului ne binecuvântează, ci DOMNUL. Doar atunci când DOMNUL este prezent în viața și casele noastre lucrurile lui Dumnezeu devin folositoare. În absența lui Dumnezeu nimeni și nimic nu ne poate ajuta.

Saturday, September 2, 2023: 1 Samuel 6:1-21 – The Philistines Return the Ark to the Israelites

Convinced of the supernatural power of the God of the Israelites, the Philistines decided to send the Ark back to Israel accompanied by many gifts: five golden tumors and five golden rats, a pair for each of the five Philistine cities. Not knowing the protocol for transporting the Ark, they placed it on a new cart.

The Israelites were overjoyed to see the Ark of the Covenant in their land after a 7 month absence (v. 1). They offered the cows that pulled the cart as a sacrifice in the town of Beth-Shemesh. Out of curiosity, the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh lifted the lid of the Ark and, against divine law, looked inside. The divine regulation stated that only the Levites could transport and touch the Ark. God's punishment came upon them, and that day 70 people died (v. 19). Horrified, the people of Beth-Shemesh sent the Ark to Kiriath-Jearim, even though its place was in Shiloh. The Ark remained in the house of Abinadab for about 100 years (7:1).

As it's time for prayer, let us thank God for giving us the Scriptures in which we can discover His “good, pleasing, and perfect” will. The experience of the Israelites' defeat by the Philistines while they had the Ark with them taught them that the presence of the Ark, in the absence of God, cannot protect them. Even today, we are tempted to “cling” to the House of the Lord, the Book of the Lord, the people of the Lord, but not to the LORD Himself. It's not the things of the Lord that bless us, but the LORD. Only when the LORD is present in our lives and homes do the things of God become useful. In the absence of God, no one and nothing can help us.
