Vineri, 1 septembrie 2023, 1 Samuel 5:1-12 – Zeul Dagon și chivotul legământului

Filistenii au capturat chivotul și l-au dus în casa lui Dagon la Asdod. Chivotul era o cutie de lemn, lungă de aproximativ 100-120 cm (3-4 ft.), având lățimea și înălțimea de 70 cm. Era acoperit în întregime cu o foiță de aur. Patru inele erau prinse lateral, pentru a fi introduse prin ele doi drugi încrustați cu aur. Deoarece chivotul trebuia purtat de leviți, drugii erau folosiți pentru această transportare a chivotului. Când Uza a transportat chivotul cu un car, Dumnezeu l-a omorât. Iată, nu pragmatismul și nici comoditatea hotărăsc cum ne raportăm la lucrurile sfinte, ci descoperirea divină prin Cuvântul Scripturii.

Filistenii au pus chivotul la picioarele zeului Dagon, ca un simbol al victoriei lui Dagon. A doua zi, filistenii au constatat cu stupoare că Dagon este întins în fața chivotului. L-au reașezat, însă în următoarea zi Dagon era zdrobit în multe bucăți și împrăștiat în casă. De asemenea, Dumnezeu a trimis peste filisteni o boală care se transmite prin șoareci și produce bube pe corp. Speriați, filistenii au trimis chivotul la Gat și mai apoi la Ecron, însă în ambele locuri s-a repetat aceeași experiență.

În rugăciunea din această dimineață vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru că prezența Sa nu mai este într-o ladă din lemn, ci este în inimile noastre. Conștienți de acest har nemeritat, vom cere înțelepciunea de a nu repeta păcatul filistenilor, încercând să-L punem pe Dumnezeu într-o cutie, limitându-L și purtându-L unde ne place nouă. Dacă Dumnezeu este Dumnezeu pentru noi în mod personal, să-L tratăm ca pe Dumnezeu, dându-I onoarea, cinstea și stăpânirea peste viețile și familiile noastre.

Friday, September 1, 2023: 1 Samuel 5:1-12 – The False God Dagon and the Ark of the Covenant

The Philistines captured the Ark and took it to Dagon's temple in Ashdod. The Ark was a wooden box, about 100-120 cm (3-4 ft.) long, with a width and height of 70 cm. It was entirely covered with a gold leaf. Four rings were attached to the sides, so that two gold-encrusted poles could be inserted. Since the Ark was to be carried by the Levites, these poles were used to transport it. When Uzzah transported the Ark on a cart, God struck him dead. And so, it is not pragmatism nor convenience that determines how we relate to holy things, but divine revelation through the Word of the Scriptures.

The Philistines placed the Ark at the feet of the god Dagon, as a symbol of Dagon's victory. The next day, the Philistines were shocked to find that Dagon’s statue lay prostrate before the Ark. They reset him, but the next day, Dagon was shattered into many pieces and scattered throughout the house. Moreover, God sent a disease upon the Philistines that is transmitted by mice and produces sores on the body. Frightened, the Philistines sent the Ark to Gath and then to Ekron, but in both places, the same thing occurred.

In this morning's prayer, we will thank God that His presence is no longer in a wooden box, but in our hearts. Aware of this undeserved grace, we will ask for the wisdom not to repeat the sin of the Philistines, trying to put God in a box, limiting Him and taking Him wherever we please. If God is our personal God, let us treat Him as God, giving Him the honor, glory, and dominion over our lives and families.
