După încheierea campaniei epuizante din sud, Iosua s-a trezit în fața unei mari coaliții care venea din partea de nord. Împărații de la miazănoapte s-au alarmat și au organizat o alianță în intenția de a opri cucerirea țării de către armata Israelului. Deși nu existau relații cordiale între împărații din nord, frica i-a motivat să organizeze o armată foarte puternică.

Iosif Flavius, istoric evreu din primul secol d. Hr., a susținut că alianță ar fi avut 300.000 de infanteriști, 10.000 în trupele de cavalerie și 20.000 de care de luptă. Dumnezeu i-a vorbit lui Iosua, făcându-i următoarea promisiune: ,,Nu te teme de ei, căci mâine, pe vremea aceasta, îi voi da pe toți bătuți înaintea lui Israel”. Dumnezeu i-a poruncit lui Iosua să taie tendoanele de la picioarele cailor și să le ardă carele (v. 6). Dumnezeu a poruncit tăierea vinelor de la picioarele cailor, deoarece canaaniții foloseau caii în închinarea păgână (2 Împărați 23:11).

Psalmistul spunea: ,,Unii se bizuiesc pe carele lor, alții pe caii lor; dar noi ne bizuim pe numele Domnului, Dumnezeului nostru” (Psalm 20:7). Victoria din partea de nord a însemnat sfârșitul oficial al campaniei de cucerire a țârii Canaanului. Biblia precizează că ,,Iosua a pus stăpânire pe toată țara” (v. 16).

În rugăciunea din această dimineață Îi vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru că este alături de noi în luptele vieții. Apoi ne vom ruga Domnului să ne echipeze cu armura spirituală pentru a dobândi victoria împotriva dușmanului: ,,Stați gata, dar, având mijlocul încins cu adevărul, îmbrăcați cu platoșa neprihănirii, având picioarele încălțate cu râvna Evangheliei păcii” (Efeseni 6:14-15) .

Wednesday, July 19, 2023: Joshua 11:1-23 – The Northern Campaign

Following the exhaustive campaign in the south, Joshua faced a significant coalition coming from the north. The northern kings were alarmed and organized an alliance with the intention of stopping the conquest of the country by Israel's army. Although there were no cordial relations among the northern kings, fear motivated them to assemble a very powerful army.

Josephus Flavius, a Jewish historian from the first century AD, suggested that the alliance would have had 300,000 infantry, 10,000 cavalry troops, and 20,000 chariots. God spoke to Joshua, making him the following promise: “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them, slain, over to Israel“. God commanded Joshua to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots (v. 6). God ordered the hamstrings of the horses to be cut because the Canaanites used horses in pagan worship (2 Kings 23:11).

The psalmist said, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we trust in the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7). The victory in the north marked the official end of the Canaanite country's conquest campaign. The Bible specifies that “Joshua took this entire land” (v. 16).

In this morning's prayer, we will thank God for being with us in the battles of life. Then we will pray to the Lord to equip us with spiritual armor to achieve victory against the enemy: “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:14-15).
