Duminica, 16 iulie 2023, Iosua 8:1-35 – Victoria asupra cetății Ai

Bucuria de la Ierihon a fost spulberată de înfrângerea de la Ai. Poporul și Iosua erau întristați. Păcatul lui Acan și subestimarea dușmanului (7:3-4) au fost cele două motive pentru care Israelul a fost învins la Ai.

După ce păcatul a fost eliminat, Dumnezeu l-a încurajat pe Iosua și i-a explicat planul pentru cucerirea cetății Ai și faptul că în această luptă soldații puteau lua din prada de război. Dacă Ierihonul a fost cucerit de Dumnezeu, cetatea Ai trebuia cucerită de Israel cu ajutorul lui Dumnezeu.

La aplicarea planului de luptă au fost necesare trei grupuri de armată. Primul grup era format din treizeci de mii de bărbați și misiunea lor era să intre în cetate și să-i dea foc când soldații plecau în urmărirea evreilor. Iosua cu al doilea grup de armată și-a așezat tabăra mai departe de Ai pentru a-i atrage să iasă din cetate. Al treilea grup militar avea o misiune similară cu grupul al doilea. Planul a funcționat conform planului și cetatea a fost cucerită.

În loc să continue campania militară, motivați de bucuria unei noi victorii, Iosua a condus poporul într-un pelerinaj spiritual pentru că așa i-a cerut Moise înainte să moară (Deuteronom 27:1-8). Au parcurs un drum de 45 de kilometri până la munții Ebal și Garizim (v. 30, 32).

Ceremoniile religioase din acest pelerinaj au avut în vedere trei lucruri:

1)         Au ridicat un altar din pietre necioplite pe muntele Ebal, în care loc au adus jertfe de mulțumire.

2)         Iosua a scris pe pietre o copie a legii lui Moise.

3)         Iosua a citit cuvintele legii în fața poporului. Jumătate din popor era pe muntele Ebal, cealaltă jumătate pe muntele Garizim. Când au fost citite blestemele, semințiile de pe muntele Ebal au spus ,,Amin!” Când au fost citite binecuvântările, semințiile de pe muntele Garizim au spus ,,Amin!” Această conștientizare a importanței legii lui Dumnezeu a modelat conștiința națională a evreilor, doar că însemnătatea acestei experiențe spirituale s-a stins repede din conștiința lor.

Este timpul rugăciunii. Vom mulțumi Domnului pentru că are răbdare cu noi și ne oferă o nouă șansă. Vom cere acum Domnului să ne păstreze credincioșia și pasiunea, să rămânem statornici și consecvenți în lucrurile pe care ni le-a încredințat Dumnezeu.

Sunday, July 16, 2023: Joshua 8:1-35 – Victory Over the City of Ai

The joy from Jericho was shattered by the defeat at Ai. The people and Joshua were saddened. Achan's sin and underestimation of the enemy (7:3-4) were the two reasons why Israel was defeated at Ai.

After the sin was removed, God encouraged Joshua and explained the plan for the conquest of the city of Ai and the fact that in this battle the soldiers could take from the spoils of war. If Jericho was conquered by God, Ai had to be conquered by Israel with God's help.

The execution of the battle plan required three groups of soldiers. The first group consisted of thirty thousand men and their mission was to enter the city and set it on fire when the city’s soldiers had left to go encounter the Jews. Joshua, with the second group of soldiers, set up a camp farther away from Ai to draw them out of the city. The third military group had a similar mission to the second group. Everything worked according to the plan and the city was conquered.

Instead of continuing the military campaign, motivated by the joy of a new victory, Joshua led the people on a spiritual pilgrimage as Moses had asked him to do before he died (Deuteronomy 27:1-8). They traveled 45 kilometers to the mountains of Ebal and Gerizim (v. 30, 32).

The religious ceremonies on this pilgrimage focused on three things:

1)    They raised an altar of uncut stones on Mount Ebal, where they offered sacrifices of gratitude.

2)    Joshua wrote a copy of Moses's law on the stones.

3)    Joshua read the words of the law to the people. Half of the people were on Mount Ebal, the other half on Mount Gerizim. When the curses were read, the tribes on Mount Ebal said, “Amen!” When the blessings were read, the tribes on Mount Gerizim said, “Amen!” This realization of the importance of God's law shaped the national consciousness of the Jews, but the significance of this spiritual experience quickly faded from their consciousness.

It is time for prayer. We will thank the Lord for His patience with us and for giving us a new chance. We will then ask the Lord to preserve our faithfulness and passion, to remain steadfast and consistent in the things that God has entrusted to us.
