Vineri, 14 iulie 2023, Iosua 6:1-27 – Cucerirea Ierihonului

Cetățile Ierihon și Ai blocau drumul evreilor pe lângă munte spre mijlocul țării. Singura soluție era cucerirea acestor cetăți, însă Ierihonul era probabil cea mai fortificată cetate din tot Canaanul. Ei nu aveau berbeci care se foloseau pentru dărâmarea porților. Nu aveau nici scări cu ajutorul cărora să urce pe ziduri. Domnul îi spusese lui Iosua că-i va da cetatea aceasta în mână. Cum?

Soluția lui Dumnezeu era incredibilă și ineficientă. În locul armelor, Iosua și bărbații de război trebuiau să dea ocol cetății o dată pe zi timp de șase zile. În aceste șase zile, șapte preoți urmau să sune din trâmbițe, mergând în urma chivotului Domnului. În ziua a șaptea trebuiau să înconjoare Ierihonul de șapte ori și cetatea se va prăbuși. Nici o strategie de război nu părea mai lipsită de logică și realism decât aceasta.

Iosua a reacționat cu ascultare. Un circuit dura între o jumătate de oră și o oră. În ziua a șaptea, la sfârșitul celui de-al șaptelea ocol, Iosua a ordonat poporului: ,,Strigați, căci Domnul v-a dat cetatea în mână”. În momentul acela, zidurile cetății s-au prăbușit într-un zgomot asurzitor. Canaaniții îngroziți au fost uciși de evrei, cu excepția familiei lui Rahav (v. 17). Cetatea a fost prădată, arsă și blestemată. A fost rostit un blestem pentru oricine va reconstrui Ierihonul, punându-i temeliile și porțile. Timp de aproximativ 500 de ani a fost respectată interdicția, până în vremea regelui Ahab. Hiel din Betel a încercat reconstruirea zidurilor cetății, însă Abiram și Segur, cei doi fii ai săi, au murit (1 Regi 16:34).

Vom începe rugăciunea de dimineață cu mulțumire. Vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu toate biruințele din viața noastră. Apoi vom continua rugăciunea cerând Domnului înțelepciunea de a gestiona o victorie. Niciodată un om sau un popor nu este mai vulnerabil ca și în urma unei victorii. Atunci apare sentimentul de satisfacție, măreție, importanță, capabilitate, competență, atotsuficiență…

Friday, July 14, 2023: Joshua 6:1-27 – The Conquest of Jericho

The cities of Jericho and Ai blocked the way of the Jews alongside the mountain towards the middle of the country. The only solution was the conquest of these cities, but Jericho was probably the most fortified city in all of Canaan. They didn't have rams that were used for tearing down gates. They didn't even have ladders to climb the walls. The Lord had told Joshua that He would give this city into his hand. But how?

God's solution seemed incredible and inefficient. Instead of weapons, Joshua and the warriors had to walk around the city once a day for six days. During these six days, seven priests were to sound trumpets as they followed the Ark of the Covenant. On the seventh day, they had to encircle Jericho seven times and the city would fall. No war strategy seemed more devoid of logic and realism than this.

Joshua reacted with obedience. One course around the city lasted between half an hour and an hour. On the seventh day, at the end of the seventh course, Joshua commanded the people: “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city into your hand.” At that moment, the walls of the city collapsed in a deafening noise. The terrified Canaanites were killed by the Jews, except for the family of Rahab (v. 17). The city was plundered, burned, and cursed. A curse was pronounced on anyone who would rebuild Jericho, laying its foundations and gates. This prohibition was respected for about 500 years, until the time of King Ahab. Hiel of Bethel tried to rebuild the city walls, but his two sons, Abiram and Segub, died (1 Kings 16:34).

We will begin our morning prayer with gratitude. We will thank God for all the victories in our lives. Then we will continue our prayer by asking the Lord for the wisdom to manage a victory. Never is a person or a people more vulnerable than in the wake of a victory. It is then that feelings of satisfaction, grandeur, importance, capability, competence, and self-sufficiency arise…
