Marți, 14 februarie 2023, Geneza 42:1-38 – Prima călătorie a fraților lui Iosif în Egipt

Dumnezeu a folosit foametea pentru a aduce israelienii în Egiptul aflat sub conducerea lui Iosif. Ei aveau să rămână în Egipt în următorii 400 de ani, așa cum i-a spus Dumnezeu lui Avraam (Geneza 15:13). Foametea din Canaan l-a determinat pe Iacov să-și trimită fiii în Egipt ca să cumpere alimente. Pe Beniamin nu l-a trimis cu ei de teamă să nu-l piardă și pe celălalt fiu al Rahelei. Cel mai probabil că bătrânul Iacov era suspicios în legătură cu fiii săi și ,,dispariția” lui Iosif, drept pentru care nu a vrut să-l trimită și pe Beniamin împreună cu ei.

Ajunși în Egipt, Iosif i-a recunoscut, însă ei nu l-au recunoscut pe el. Deși Iosif îi iubea mult în inima lui pe frații lui, s-a purtat aspru cu ei și de patru ori i-a acuzat de spionaj (v. 9, 12, 14, 16). După ce i-a interogat, a poruncit să fie puși în închisoare pentru trei zile. În inimile fraților lui a început să se trezească sentimentul de vinovăție pentru că l-au vândut pe Iosif, condamnându-l în felul acesta să trăiască restul vieții ca rob cine știe pe unde. Ei se autoînvinovățeau și se acuzau reciproc pentru ce au făcut cu aproximativ 14 ani înainte.

Iosif le-a spus că are nevoie de dovezi ca să se convingă că nu sunt iscoade, motiv pentru care l-a reținut pe Simeon, iar pe ceilalți 9 i-a lăsat să plece în Canaan, sub condiția să-l aducă pe Beniamin, fratele lor cel mai mic. Aceasta urma să fie dovada că nu sunt iscoade.

Ei au plecat spre Canaan, luând cu ei sacii de grâu pe care i-au cumpărat, însă pe drum au descoperit că argintul cu care au plătit grâul era în sacul fiecăruia. Iosif poruncise slujitorilor lui să le pună argintul în saci, pentru a amplifica mai mult frica lor de Domnul: ,,Atunci li s-a tăiat inima; și au zis unul altuia, tremurând: “Ce ne-a făcut Dumnezeu?” (v. 28). Pe lângă faptul că erau acuzați de spionaj, acum se adăuga și furtul la cazierul lor.

Prezența lor în Egipt confirma autenticitatea viselor lui Iosif pe care le-a avut cu aproximativ 14 ani înainte, în Canaan (37:5-11). El a știut că întreaga familie va trebui să vină în Egipt sub conducerea lui, de aceea se comporta așa cu frații săi.

Ajunși în Canaan, au povestit întristați ce li s-a întâmplat. Iacov s-a îngrozit la gândul că-l va pierde și pe Beniamin. Ruben a încercat să-l încurajeze, asumându-și responsabilitatea pe viața fiilor săi. Iacov a refuzat, speriat. Este ciudat faptul că Ruben se angajează să-l protejeze pe Beniamin, în timp ce nu a putut să-l protejeze pe Iosif (37:21-22).

În rugăciunea din această dimineață Îi vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu că El conduce viețile noastre în cele mai mici detalii. Apoi Îl vom ruga să ne ajute să rămânem credincioși, chiar dacă uneori va trebui să folosească nuiaua.

Tuesday, February 14, 2023: Genesis 42:1-38 – The First Journey of Joseph’s Brothers to Egypt

God used famine to bring the Israelites to Egypt when it was under Joseph’s command. They would remain in Egypt for the next 400 years, as God had told Abraham (Genesis 15:13). The famine in Canaan caused Jacob to send his sons to Egypt to buy food. He did not send Benjamin with them for fear of losing Rachel’s other son as well. Most likely, the elderly Jacob was suspicious of his sons and Joseph’s supposed “disappearance”, which was why he did not want to send Benjamin with them.

Upon their arrival in Egypt, Joseph recognized them, but they did not recognize him. Although Joseph loved his brothers very much in his heart, he treated them harshly and accused them of spying four times (vv. 9, 12, 14, 16). After questioning them, he ordered them to be imprisoned for three days. A sense of guilt began to rise in his brothers’ hearts because they had sold Joseph, thus condemning him to live out the rest of his life as a slave somewhere unknown to them. They were blaming themselves and blaming each other for what they had done approximately 14 years prior.

Joseph told them that he needed evidence to be convinced they were not spies, which is why he detained Simeon and let the other 9 go back to Canaan, on the condition that they bring Benjamin, their younger brother. This was to be proof that they were not spies.

They set out for Canaan, taking with them the sacks they had brought, now filled with wheat, but on the way, they discovered that the money with which they had paid for the wheat was in their own sacks. Joseph had ordered his servants to put their silver in their sacks, to further increase their fear of the Lord: “Then their hearts were cut off; and they said to one another, trembling, “What has God done to us?” (v. 28). In addition to being charged with espionage, theft was now added to their record.

Their presence in Egypt confirmed the authenticity of Joseph’s dreams 14 years earlier in Canaan (37:5-11). He knew that the whole family would have to come to Egypt under his leadership, which is why he treated his brothers the way he did.

When they arrived in Canaan, the brothers sadly explained what had happened to them. Jacob was horrified at the thought of losing Benjamin as well. Ruben tried to encourage him by taking responsibility for the youngest son’s life, but Jacob still refused, fearful. It is strange that Reuben volunteers to protect Benjamin, while he could not protect Joseph (37:21-22).

In this morning’s prayer we will thank God that He directs our lives even in the smallest details. Then we will ask Him to help us remain faithful, even if sometimes He must use the rod.
