Marți, 13 iunie 2023, Deuteronom 9:1-10:11 – Avertisment împotriva spiritului de auto neprihănire

Capitolul de față are scopul de a spulbera intenția evreilor de superioritate și merite personale. Dumnezeu prin Moise le explică faptul că alegerea lor ca popor al lui Dumnezeu s-a făcut ,,în ciuda” la ceea ce sunt ei, nu ,,pentru” ceea ce sunt (v. 4-7). Canaanul în care urmau să intre nu a fost o recompensă pentru neprihănirea și meritele lor, ci un har pe care l-au primit în dar de la Dumnezeu.

Din punct de vedere militar, Israelul nu avea absolut nicio șansă să învingă popoarele din Canaan care erau foarte puternice și bine organizate. Fiindcă Dumnezeu urma să distrugă aceste popoare, ar fi fost ușor pentru evrei să se laude cu victoria asupra lor. Datorită acestui raționament, Moise le explică cele trei motive ale victoriilor Israelului în cucerirea Țării Promise:

1)      Din cauza răutății acestor neamuri, Dumnezeu le-a izgonit din Canaan;

2)      Datorită promisiunilor făcute de Dumnezeu patriarhilor Avraam, Isaac și Iacov (Geneza 15:18-21);

3)      Dumnezeu va da Canaanul Israelului ca un dar al bunătății Sale.

Israelul era ,,un popor tare încăpățânat” (v. 6) și ar fi meritat să fie distrus, nicidecum învingător. De câteva ori Moise s-a rugat și a postit câte 40 de zile, mijlocind înaintea lui Dumnezeu pentru iertarea acestui popor încăpățânat. El a mijlocit și pentru iertarea lui Aaron care a făcut poporului un vițel din aur în fața căruia israelienii s-au închinat.

Este timpul să ne rugăm și vom mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru tot ce ne-a dat fără să merităm. Apoi vom cere Domnului puterea să ne smerim și obiectivitatea de a nu ne asuma niciun merit pentru tot ceea ce El a făcut cu noi și casele noastre. Doar mândria și o părere înaltă despre noi ne-ar putea face să credem, în mod greșit, că ceea ce avem este de fapt o recompensă pentru ceea ce merităm.

Tuesday, June 13, 2023: Deuteronomy 9:1-10:11 – Warning Against Self-Righteousness

The purpose of this chapter is to dispel the Jews' intentions of superiority and personal merits. God, through Moses, explains that God’s decision to make them His chosen people was made “in spite of” what they are, not “because of” what they are (v. 4-7). The Canaan they were about to enter was not a reward for their righteousness and merits, but a grace they received as a gift from God.

Militarily, Israel had absolutely no chance to defeat the nations of Canaan, which were very powerful and well-organized. Because God was going to destroy these nations, it would have been easy for the Jews to boast about their victory over them. Because of this reasoning, Moses explains the three reasons for Israel's victories in conquering the Promised Land:

1)    Due to the wickedness of these nations, God drove them out of Canaan

2)    Due to the promises made by God to the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 15:18-21)

3)    God would give Canaan to Israel as a gift of His goodness.

Israel was “a stiff-necked people” (v. 6) and would have deserved to be destroyed, not victorious. Multiple times, Moses prayed and fasted for 40 days, interceding before God for the forgiveness of this stubborn people. He also interceded for the forgiveness of Aaron, who had made a golden calf for the people to worship.

It is time to pray, and we will thank God for everything He has given us even though we did not deserve it. Then we will ask the Lord for the strength to humble ourselves and the objectivity not to assume any personal merit for everything He has done with us and our homes. Only pride and a high opinion of ourselves could make us wrongly believe that what we have is a reward for what we deserve.
