Marți, 12 septembrie 2023, 1 Samuel 16:1-23 – David uns împărat

La câțiva kilometri de Ierusalim se afla Betleemul unde, cu peste o mie de ani înainte de a fi așezat în iesle pruncul Isus, se născuse David, fiul lui Isai. După ce Saul a fost lepădat, Dumnezeu i-a cerut lui Samuel să ungă un nou împărat. Pentru că Samuel îl cunoștea foarte bine pe Saul, a anticipat suspiciunea și răzbunarea acestuia. Dumnezeu i-a prezentat un plan și Samuel a organizat o sărbătoare la Betleem în cadrul căreia va aduce o jertfă Domnului împreună cu Isai, nepotul lui Boaz și Rut (Rut 4:18-21).

Când betleemiții l-au văzut pe profet în cetatea lor s-au speriat, crezând că a venit să pronunțe o pedeapsă împotriva păcatelor lor. În timpul ceremoniei aducerii jertfei, cei șapte fii au trecut unul câte unu prin fața lui Samuel și el se aștepta ca fiecare dintre ei să fie noul împărat. Văzându-i mirarea, Dumnezeu i-a spus lui Samuel să nu aleagă în funcție de ,,ce izbește ochiul”, înfățișarea, statura, ci în funcție de curăția și starea inimii. 

La sfârșit, profetul l-a întrebat pe Isai dacă mai are fii, și acesta i-a spus că mai are un fiu mai mic care păzește oile. Fiind chemat, David a venit și Dumnezeu i-a spus lui Samuel: ,,Scoală-te și unge-l că el este” (vers. 12). Duhul lui Dumnezeu a coborât peste băiatul ,,cu păr bălai”, validând numirea acestuia ca rege în locul lui Saul.

Pentru a pune și mai mult în evidență călăuzirea divină în alegerea lui David ca împărat, Duhul Sfânt l-a părăsit pe Saul și un duh rău a venit peste el ca ,,să-l muncească” (vers. 14). La sugestia slujitorilor săi, Saul l-a chemat pe David și când acesta cânta cu harpa, duhul cel rău pleca de la el și se simțea ușurat. David a fost invitat de Saul să rămână la palat să-i slujească și să-i poarte armele. Este interesant faptul că și oamenii munciți de duhuri rele știu să evalueze calitatea oamenilor din jurul lor, făcând diferența între cei care sunt călăuziți de Dumnezeu și cei care sunt călăuziți de fire sau de diavolul.

Deși tânărul David a trăit în umbra fraților săi, mai târziu a fost hăituit ani de zile de socrul său, Saul, deși întreaga viață a avut parte de multe și grele războaie, Dumnezeu a fost cu el și i-a dat biruință. Uneori, și noi repetăm greșeala lui Saul, alegând mai mult după criterii estetice, resurse, oportunități și capacități omenești, uitând de faptul că Dumnezeu îi alege pe oameni după caracter, motivație, smerenie și rezultate.

Fiind timpul rugăciunii, ne vom ruga Domnului, mulțumindu-I pentru că ne vorbește și ne călăuzește potrivit voii Sale. Apoi, vom cere de la Dumnezeu o inimă curată, pașnică, blândă și smerită. Ne vom ruga pentru înțelepciune și călăuzire pentru a putea face diferența dintre voia noastră și voia lui Dumnezeu.

Tuesday, September 12, 2023: 1 Samuel 16:1-23 – David Anointed King

A few kilometers from Jerusalem was Bethlehem where, over a thousand years before the infant Jesus was laid in a manger, David, the son of Jesse, was born. After Saul was rejected, God instructed Samuel to anoint a new king. Knowing Saul well, Samuel anticipated his suspicion and vengeance. God provided Samuel with a plan, and Samuel organized a feast in Bethlehem, where he would offer a sacrifice to the Lord alongside Jesse, the grandson of Boaz and Ruth (Ruth 4:18-21).

When the Bethlehemites saw the prophet in their city, they were afraid, thinking he had come to pronounce a punishment for their sins. During the sacrificial ceremony, Jesse's seven sons passed one by one before Samuel, and he expected each one of them to be the new king. Observing Samuel's wonder, God told him not to choose based on outward appearances, such as looks or stature, but rather on the purity and condition of one's heart.

At the end, the prophet asked Jesse if he had more sons, and he mentioned his youngest son who was out tending the sheep. When called, David arrived, and God told Samuel, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he” (verse 12). The Spirit of God descended upon the young “ruddy-haired” boy, validating his appointment as king in place of Saul.

Highlighting the divine guidance in the choice for David as king, the Holy Spirit left Saul, and an evil spirit came upon him, tormenting him (verse 14). At the suggestion of his servants, Saul summoned David. When David played the harp, the evil spirit left Saul, bringing relief. Saul invited David to stay in the palace to serve him and carry his weapons. Interestingly, even those tormented by evil spirits can assess the quality of people around them, distinguishing between those guided by God and those driven by their nature or the devil.

Although young David lived in the shadow of his brothers and was later persecuted for years by his father-in-law, Saul, he faced many wars and challenges throughout his life. However, God was with him and granted him victory. Sometimes we, too, make the same mistake as Saul, choosing based on aesthetic criteria, resources, opportunities, and human capabilities, forgetting that God selects individuals based on character, motivation, humility, and outcomes.

It is time for prayer, and we will pray to the Lord, thanking Him for speaking to us and guiding us according to His will. We will then ask God for a pure, peaceful, gentle, and humble heart. We will pray for wisdom and guidance to distinguish between our will and God's will.
