Joi, 12 ianuarie, Geneza 10:1-32 – Primul Babilon

Privind lista generațiilor fiilor lui Noe din Geneza 10, printre toate celelalte nume întâlnim numele lui Nimrod care înseamnă ,,rebel, răzvrătit, războinic”. Versetul 10 enumeră orașele peste care a domnit el, primul fiind Babel. Babilonul a fost prima aglomerare urbană de după potop, iar numele celui care a zidit-o are semnificația de „rebel”!

Ni se spune că omul acesta a mai zidit și alte cetăți: „El a domnit la început peste Babel, Erec, Acad și Calne, în țara Șinear” (Gen. 10:10). Șinear este câmpia aluvionară din sudul Irakului modern, între Bagdadul de azi și golful în care se varsă Tigrul și Eufratul. Șinear este regiunea, Babilon este cetatea, Nimrod este întemeietorul, iar clădirea principală este turnul Babel.

În această dimineață vom mulțumi Domnului pentru că Si-a înnoit bunătatea față de om, acordându-i har în vederea răscumpărării din starea de rebeliune. Ne vom ruga pentru asumarea responsabilă a noii identități primite prin credința în jertfa Domnului Isus Hristos. El ne zidește o cetate veșnică.

Thursday, January 12: Genesis 10:1-32 – The First Babylon

            Looking at the list of generations of Noah’s sons in Genesis 10, among all the other names we encounter Nimrod which means “rebel, nonconformist, warrior”. Verse 10 names the cities he reigned over, the first being Babel. Babylon was the first urban congestion after the flood, and the name of the one who built it has the significance of being “rebel”.

            We are told that this man built other cities as well: “The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar” (Gen. 10:10). Shinar is the alluvial plain of southern present-day Iraq, between Baghdad and the gulf where the Tigris and Euphrates flow. Shinar is the region, Babylon is the city, Nimrod is the founder, and the main building is the tower of Babel.

            This morning we will thank the Lord for renewing His goodness toward man, granting him grace toward redemption despite man’s state of rebellion. We will pray that we will responsibly take on our new identity through our faith in the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is building for us an everlasting city.
