Sâmbătă, 11 februarie 2023, Geneza 39:1-23 – Iosif în Egipt

Capitolul 39 se împarte prin conținutul lui în trei părți: (1) Iosif în casa lui Potifar; (2) Ispitirea lui Iosif; (3) Iosif în închisoare. Plecând din Dotan, caravana negustorilor a trebuit să parcurgă cei 370 km/230 mile pentru a ajunge în Egipt. Aici, Iosif a fost vândut lui Potifar în jurul vârstei de 18 ani. Vândut a doua oară într-o perioadă de 1 an de zile! Potifar, un om influent și foarte bogat, era comandantul gărzilor de la palatul lui Faraon.

Faptul că Dumnezeu a fost cu Iosif l-a făcut un bărbat harnic, responsabil și foarte priceput. În felul acesta, Potifar l-a promovat tot mai mult, până când l-a numit administrator peste toată casa lui. Datorită lui Iosif, Dumnezeu a binecuvântat casa egipteanului. Soția lui Potifar a remarcat frumusețea și farmecul lui Iosif și a început să-i facă complimente și avansuri (39:10). Probabil că Iosif avea peste 25 de ani când stăpâna a început să-i ceară insistent să ,,se culce cu ea” (v. 7). Un proverb azer spune că frumusețea fără virtute este un mare blestem.

Excelența caracterului acestui tânăr bărbat strălucește cu putere prin răspunsurile pe care le-a dat soției lui Potifar:

1) Sunt recunoscător stăpânului meu pentru încrederea și autoritatea pe care mi le-a dat.

2) Mă tem de Dumnezeu și am respect față de stăpânul meu (Potifar) care mi-a dat totul pe mână, cu excepția ta (v. 9).

Umilită de răspunsul lui Iosif, egipteanca a mințit pentru a-l acuza pe Iosif de viol. Drept dovadă, a arătat haina lui Iosif pe care el o lăsase când a fugit să scape de insistențele ei. Aceasta a fost a doua oară când haina lui Iosif a fost folosită ca să susțină o minciună (37:31-33; 39:13-14). Ambele minciuni au fost crezute și în ambele situații Iosif a ajuns în robie.

Iosif a fost pus în închisoare de către Potifar care a fost convins de soția lui că ,,robul acela evreu” (v. 17) este vinovat. Singurul lucru care a contat în tot acest scenariu nedrept a fost faptul că Dumnezeu a știut adevărul și l-a protejat pe Iosif: ,,Domnul a fost cu Iosif și Și-a întins bunătatea peste el. L-a făcut să capete trecere în fața mai marilor temniței” (v. 21).

Dovada că Iosif a rămas lângă Dumnezeu în închisoare este faptul că interpreta vise. În acest capitol de patru ori se repetă afirmația: ,,Domnul a fost cu Iosif” (v. 2-3, 21 și 23). Ca și în casa lui Potifar, calitățile lui Iosif au fost remarcate de administratorii închisorii și aceștia au pus toți deținuții sub autoritatea lui. Faptul că Potifar și administratorii temniței l-au pus pe Iosif să conducă demonstrează abilitățile sale de lider. Faptul că Iosif a rezistat avansurilor soției lui Potifar demonstrează caracterul și sfințenia lui. Datorită acestor calități ,,Domnul a fost cu Iosif”.

Începem rugăciunea exprimându-ne mulțumirea față de Dumnezeu pentru că, trecând prin încercările și suferințele vieții, El a fost cu noi. Apoi vom cere Domnului discernămâtul și puterea necesară pentru a rezista ispitelor sexuale.

Saturday, February 11, 2023: Genesis 39: 1-23 – Joseph in Egypt

            Chapter 39 is divided by its content into three parts: (1) Joseph in Potiphar’s house; (2) The Temptation of Joseph; (3) Joseph in prison. When they left Dothan, the merchant caravan had to travel 370 km/230 miles to reach Egypt. Here, Joseph was sold to Potiphar around the age of 18; sold for the second time in less than 1 year! Potiphar, an influential and very rich man, was the commander of the guards at Pharaoh’s palace.

The fact that God was with Joseph made him a hardworking, responsible, and very skilled man. Consequently, Potiphar promoted him more and more, until he made him steward over his entire household. Because of Joseph, God blessed the Egyptian’s household. Potiphar’s wife noticed Joseph’s good looks and charm and began complimenting him and making advances toward him (39:10). Joseph was likely just over 25 years old when his master’s wife began insistently asking him to “lie with her” (v. 7). An Azerbaijani proverb says that beauty without virtue is a great curse.

The greatness of this young man’s character shines brightly through his responses to Potiphar’s wife:

1) I am grateful to my master for the trust and authority he has given me.

2) I fear God and have respect for my master (Potiphar) who entrusted everything in my hand, except for you (v. 9).

Humiliated by Joseph’s answer, the Egyptian woman lied and accused Joseph of rape. As proof, she showed Joseph’s coat that he had left behind when he ran away from her insistence. This was the second time Joseph’s garment was used to support a lie (37:31-33; 39:13-14). Both lies were believed and, in both cases, Joseph ended up in captivity.

Joseph was put in prison by Potiphar who was convinced by his wife that “that Hebrew servant” (v. 17) was guilty. The only thing that mattered in the entire unjust scenario was that God knew the truth and protected Joseph: “The Lord was with him. He showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden” (v. 21).

The proof that Joseph stayed close to God in prison is the fact that he interpreted dreams. In this chapter the statement is repeated four times: “The Lord was with Joseph” (vv. 2-3, 21 and 23). Like in Potiphar’s house, Joseph’s qualities were noted by the prison wardens, and they placed all the other inmates under his authority. The fact that Potiphar and the prison administrators put Joseph in charge demonstrates his leadership skills. The fact that Joseph resisted the advances of Potiphar’s wife demonstrates his character and holiness. Because of these qualities, “the Lord was with Joseph“.

We begin our prayer today by expressing our gratitude to God that, through the trials and tribulations of life, He has been with us. Then we will ask the Lord for discernment and strength to resist sexual temptations.
