Joi, 10 august 2023, Judecători 9:1-57 – Uneltirea lui Abimelec și sfârșitul lui rușinos

Abimelec era fiul lui Ghedeon de la o țiitoare/concubină (8:31). Abimelec nu a avut o relație bună cu frații vitregi ai tatălui său, dar a fost apropiat de unchii lui din Sihem. Sihemul era un centru comercial puternic așezat la intersecția unor drumuri importante, în valea dintre munții Garizim și Ebal, de unde au fost citite în timpul lui Iosua binecuvântările și blestemele Legii (8:30-35).

Pentru a evita competiția fraților lui, a angajat niște oameni de nimic care i-au ucis pe cei 70 de membri ai familiei tatălui său. A scăpat doar Iotam, fratele vitreg de la tatăl său. Abimelec a fost încoronat ca rege la Sihem. Iotam a fugit, s-a urcat pe vârful muntelui Garizim și a strigat încât să audă toți locuitorii Sihemului, spunând o fabulă. Ideea principală a discursului său era că oamenii care nu au valoare au nevoie să-i conducă pe alții. În felul acesta, simt că sunt valoroși. Iotam a reproșat locuitorilor cetății că s-au purtat cu nedreptate și răutate față de familia lui Ghedeon care a scăpat țara de Madianiți.

Între timp s-a mai ridicat un conducător la Sihem, Gaal, fiul lui Ebed. Abimelec a venit cu soldații săi și l-au alungat pe Gaal și familia lui din Sihem. De frica unei posibile revolte a sihemiților, Abimelec a distrus Sihemul, i-a ucis pe locuitorii ei și a presărat sare pe dărâmături ca un simbol al blestemului. Apoi, Abimelec a cucerit cetatea Tebet, o cetate subordonată administrativ Sihemului. Când Abimelec s-a apropiat de ușa turnului din Tebet să-i pună foc, o femeie a aruncat cu o piatră și i-a zdrobit capul. În ultimele clipe de viață, a cerut soldatului care-i purta armele să-l ucidă cu sabia pentru a nu intra în istorie ca un rege omorât de o femeie. În felul acesta s-a împlinit blestemul lui Iotam, fiul lui Ghedeon (v. 20).

Este timpul rugăciunii și Îi mulțumim Domnului pentru învățăturile prețioase din Scriptura care ne educă mintea și ne călăuzesc duhul. Apoi vom cere Domnului înțelepciunea și puterea de a nu accepta competiția, în mod deosebit în familie.

Thursday, August 10, 2023: Judges 9:1-57 – Abimelech's Plot and His Shameful End

Abimelech was Gideon's son by a concubine (8:31). Abimelech did not have a good relationship with his father's half-brothers, but he was close to his uncles from Shechem. Shechem was a strong commercial center located at the intersection of major roads, in the valley between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, where the blessings and curses of the Law were read during Joshua's time (8:30-35).

To avoid competition from his brothers, he hired some reckless scoundrels who killed the 70 members of his father's family. Only Jotham, his father's half-brother, escaped. Abimelech was crowned king at Shechem. Jotham fled, climbed to the top of Mount Gerizim, and shouted so that all the inhabitants of Shechem could hear, telling a fable. The main idea of his speech was that people who have no value need to lead others. In this way, they feel valuable. Jotham reproached the city's inhabitants for behaving unjustly and wickedly towards Gideon's family, who saved the country from the Midianites.

Meanwhile, another leader rose in Shechem, Gaal, the son of Ebed. Abimelech came with his soldiers and drove Gaal and his family out of Shechem. Fearing a possible revolt from the Shechemites, Abimelech destroyed Shechem, killed its inhabitants, and sprinkled salt on the ruins as a symbol of the curse. Then, Abimelech conquered the city of Thebez, a city administratively subordinate to Shechem. As Abimelech approached the door of the tower of Thebez to set it on fire, a woman threw a stone and crushed his skull. In the last moments of his life, he asked the soldier who was carrying his weapons to kill him with a sword so as not to go down in history as a king killed by a woman. In this way, the curse of Jotham, the son of Gideon, was fulfilled (v. 20).

It is time for prayer, and we thank the Lord for the valuable lessons from Scripture that educate our minds and guide our spirit. Then we will ask the Lord for the wisdom and strength to not accept competition, especially in the family.
