Marți, 1 august 2023, Iosua 24:1-33 – Sfaturile lui Iosua pentru poporul evreu

Mesajul rostit de către bătrânul general în fața conducătorilor evrei din capitolul 23 este reluat la Sihem în fața poporului, în capitolul 24. Sihemul se afla la doar câțiva kilometri de Silo și a fost locul unde a primit pentru prima oară promisiunea lui Dumnezeu. Atunci Avraam a zidit un altar și s-a închinat în fața lui Dumnezeu (Geneza 12:6-7).

În acest ultim mesaj, credinciosul comandant evocă credincioșia lui Dumnezeu prin împlinirea promisiunilor Sale. ,,vorbele bune…” (21:45). Iosua avertizează poporul de nenorocirile la care se expune dacă nu vor asculta de Dumnezeu.

În cadrul acestei ceremonii oficiale, bătrânul comandant încheie un document de reînnoire a legământului. În preambul, Dumnezeu, în calitate de Autor al legământului, reînnoiește Legământul cu Israel în calitate de popor al lui Dumnezeu. Urmează prologul istoric în care Dumnezeu le amintește de binecuvântările Sale revărsate asupra lor. De 18 ori se repetă verbele folosite la persoana întâi singular: ,,V-am adus… i-am nimicit…”.

Apoi sunt prezentate responsabilitățile legământului ce revin poporului:

1.     să se teamă de Dumnezeu și să-I slujească.

2.     să respingă orice alianță cu popoarele păgâne.

În locul acesta, cu câteva sute de ani în urmă, Iacov și familia sa au avut un nou început cu Dumnezeu. Discursul lui Iosua a avut patru părți. El a încheiat spunând celebra afirmație: ,,Cât despre mine, eu și casa mea vom sluji Domnului” (24:15). Fiind mulțumit parțial de seriozitatea cu care poporul și-a asumat legământul cu Dumnezeu, Iosua a scris acordul făcut între popor și Dumnezeu în cartea Legii care, cel mai probabil, a fost așezată lângă chivot.

Apoi, Iosua a scris prevederile legământului pe o piatră mare pe care a așezat-o sub stejarul din Sihem. Acolo îngropase Iacov bijuteriile familiei în drum spre Betel, unde urma să se închine lui Dumnezeu. În încheiere, Iosua a spus că ,,piatra aceasta va fi martoră împotriva noastră că a auzit toate cuvintele pe care ni le-a spus Domnul…” (24:27)

În rugăciunea care urmează vom mulțumi Domnului pentru răbdarea pe care o are cu noi. Foarte multă răbdare! Vom continua rugăciunea, reconsacrându-ne pentru Dumnezeu ca o împrospătare a legământului încheiat cu Domnul la începutul vieții noastre spirituale. În felul acesta vom continua să ne sfințim și să-L slujim pe Dumnezeu într-o nouă etapă a vieții noastre spirituale. Dumnezeu așteaptă această înnoire de la noi, înnoirea responsabilă a legământului cu Dumnezeu!

Tuesday, August 1, 2023, Joshua 24:1-33 – Joshua's Advice to the Jewish People

The message given by the elder general to the Jewish leaders in Chapter 23 is repeated in Shechem to the people in Chapter 24. Shechem was only a few kilometers away from Shiloh and was the place where Abraham first received God's promise. Then Abraham built an altar and worshipped God (Genesis 12:6-7).

In this final message, the faithful commander recalls God's faithfulness by fulfilling His promises “…good promises…” (21:45). Joshua warns the people of the disasters they expose themselves to if they do not obey God.

As part of this official ceremony, the old commander finalizes a covenant renewal document. In the preamble, God, as the Author of the covenant, renews the Covenant with Israel as God's people. The historical prologue follows, in which God reminds them of His blessings poured upon them. The verbs used in the first-person singular are repeated 18 times: “I brought you… I destroyed them…”.

Then the covenant's responsibilities that fall to the people are presented:

1.     to fear God and to serve Him.

2.     to reject any alliance with the pagan people.

In this place, a few hundred years earlier, Jacob and his family had a fresh start with God. Joshua's speech had four parts. He concluded by stating the famous phrase: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (24:15). Being partially satisfied with the seriousness with which the people assumed their covenant with God, Joshua wrote the agreement made between the people and God in the Book of the Law, which was likely placed next to the Ark.

Then, Joshua wrote the provisions of the covenant on a large stone that he placed under the oak tree in Shechem. There, Jacob had buried the family's jewelry on the way to Bethel, where he was going to worship God. In closing, Joshua said that “this stone will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words that the Lord has said to us…” (24:27)

In our prayer today, we will thank the Lord for His patience with us. So much patience! We will continue our prayer, rededicating ourselves to God as a renewal of the covenant we made with the Lord at the beginning of our spiritual life. In this way, we will continue to sanctify ourselves and serve God in a new stage of our spiritual life. God expects this renewal from us, the responsible renewal of the covenant with God!
