După bătălia de la Eben-Ezer (7:12), în următorii 30 de ani, Israel a avut o perioadă bună sub conducerea lui Samuel. Profetul avea vârsta de aproximativ 70 de ani și bătrânii au venit la el, exprimându-și îngrijorarea cu privire la viitorul conducător. Ei i-au amintit lui Samuel că fiii lui, Ioel și Abia, nu se calificau să conducă poporul, deoarece ,,…se dădeau la lăcomie, luau mită și călcau dreptatea” (v. 3).

Mai mult de-atât, bătrânii au ajuns la concluzia că organizarea ca federație de 12 seminții conducea la un dezavantaj militar. Ei au propus o guvernare centrală care să aibă un rege învestit cu autoritate peste toate cele 12 seminții și să aibă o armată permanentă. Ei și-au dorit să aibă un rege așa cum aveau ,,celelalte națiuni”.

Este incredibil instinctul oamenilor de a deveni ca ,,ceilalți”. Pentru foarte mulți oameni ,,ceilalți” este marele model. Nu Dumnezeu, nu cineva (concret, definit), ci întotdeauna ,,ceilalți” (adică oricine).

Deși Dumnezeu era regele lor, era resursa și protecția lor, ei își doreau un (alt) rege ca ,,ceilalți”.

Israel a argumentat de ce au nevoie de un rege: (1) ,,ne va judeca”, (2) ,,va merge înaintea noastră” și (3) ,,ne va conduce în războaie” (vers. 20). Este atât de dureroasă lipsa evreilor de loialitate față de Dumnezeu! Nu i-a judecat Dumnezeu cu dreptate și milă în toată istoria lor? Nu i-a condus Dumnezeu mergând înaintea lor în cei 430 de ani de robie în Egipt? Nu i-a condus El în războaie în cei 40 de ani de peregrinări în pustie?

Nerecunoștința și infidelitatea spirituală au fost marile lor probleme. Un popor infidel, un popor care flirtează cu idolii făcuți de mâna omului…

Samuel s-a întristat, însă Dumnezeu i-a cerut să asculte glasul poporului, fiindcă această cerere se încadra în comportamentul lor neascultător și răzvrătit. La porunca lui Dumnezeu, Samuel i-a informat pe israelieni care sunt drepturile regelui și obligațiile poporului. Monarhia presupune taxe, un aparat administrativ, funcționari, pământuri și clădiri, armată, armament, iar poporul trebuia să muncească pentru toate aceste lucruri.

Este timpul potrivit să ne rugăm, mulțumind Domnului pentru că este Împăratul nostru. Apoi, ne vom ruga să rămânem loiali, supuși și ascultători față de Dumnezeu. O inimă împărțită între Dumnezeu și ,,ceilalți’ este dovada unui adulter spiritual. Cristos spunea: ,,nimeni nu poate sluji la doi stăpâni” (Matei 6:24). Alege pe cine iubești și iubește pe cine ai ales!

Monday, September 4, 2023: 1 Samuel 8:1-22 – The Israelites Ask for a king

After the battle at Eben-Ezer (7:12), for the next 30 years, Israel had a good period under Samuel's leadership. The prophet was about 70 years old, and the elders came to him, expressing their concern about the future leader. They reminded Samuel that his sons, Joel and Abijah, were not qualified to lead the people because they “… had dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice” (v. 3).

Moreover, the elders concluded that organizing as a federation of 12 tribes would lead to a military disadvantage. They proposed a centralized governance with a king vested with authority over all 12 tribes and a standing army. They wanted a king just like “the other nations.”

It's incredible how people instinctively want to become like “the others.” For many people, “the others” are a great model. Not God, not someone specific, but always “the others” (meaning anyone).

Although God was their king and their protection, they wanted another king like “the others.” Israel explained why they needed a king: (1) “he will judge us,” (2) “he will go before us,” and (3) “he will lead us in wars” (v. 20). The Jews' lack of loyalty to God is so painful! Hadn’t God judged them with justice and mercy throughout their history? Hadn’t God led them by going before them during their 430 years of slavery in Egypt? Hadn’t He led them in wars during their 40 years of wandering in the desert?

Ingratitude and spiritual infidelity were their significant issues. A faithless nation, a nation that flirts with idols made by human hands…

Samuel was saddened, but God asked him to listen to the people's voice, as this request fit their disobedient and rebellious behavior. At God's command, Samuel informed the Israelites about the king's rights and the people's obligations. Monarchy implies taxes, an administrative apparatus, officials, lands and buildings, an army, weapons, and the people had to work for all these things.

It is the right time to pray, thanking the Lord because He is our King. Then, we'll pray to remain loyal, submissive, and obedient to God. A heart divided between God and “the others” is evidence of spiritual adultery. Christ said, “No one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). Choose whom you love and love whom you have chosen!
