Capitolul 3 descrie retrimiterea lui Iona în misiune și reacția surprinzătoare a ninivenilor care răspund cu pocăință și smerenie la chemarea lui Dumnezeu.

Iona a parcurs cei aproximativ 900 de km până la Ninive. Capitala Asiriei este numită de trei ori „cetatea cea mare” (1:2, 3:2, 4:11) și o dată „o cetate foarte mare” (3:3). Circumferința zidului exterior al cetății este de aproximativ 13 km.

Dumnezeu a oferit o a doua șansă profetului neascultător, dar și celor 120.000 de cetățeni ai capitalei asiriene (4:11).

Este demn de remarcat faptul că Dumnezeu nu a mai repetat motivul pentru care trebuie să meargă la Ninive. De data aceasta, „Iona s-a sculat și s-a dus la Ninive, după Cuvântul Domnului.” (vers. 3a)

Pentru a înțelege mai bine structura capitolului, îl vom împărți în câteva secțiuni:

1. Retrimiterea lui Iona la Ninive (vers. 1–2)
„Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit a doua oară lui Iona…” (vers. 1)
Dumnezeu nu renunță la slujitorii Săi și la planul Său pentru ei.

2. Iona evanghelizează Ninive (vers. 3–4)
„Încă patruzeci de zile, și Ninive va fi nimicită!” (vers. 4b)
Dumnezeu onorează slujirea făcută cu ascultare și responsabilitate.

3. Pocăința ninivenilor (vers. 5–9)
„Oamenii din Ninive au crezut în Dumnezeu, au vestit un post și s-au îmbrăcat cu saci…” (vers. 5)
În mod absolut neașteptat, ninivenii și împăratul lor s-au pocăit, s-au rugat, s-au întors de la comportamentul lor păcătos și au vestit un post de smerire înaintea Domnului.

4. Dumnezeu este milostiv și-i iartă pe oameni când aceștia regretă păcatele lor (vers. 10)
„Dumnezeu a văzut ce făceau… și S-a căit de răul pe care Se hotărâse să-l facă.”
Credința și pocăința autentice conduc la schimbarea comportamentului și a principiilor vieții.

Din mesajul acestui capitol înțelegem că mântuirea nu este doar pentru Israel, ci pentru toate popoarele de pe fața pământului.

Ninive din vremea lui Iona a avut o sută douăzeci de mii de locuitori – astăzi are opt miliarde de oameni.

Când profetul a refuzat să-i evanghelizeze pe niniveni, Dumnezeu S-a supărat pe el și l-a implicat într-o experiență dramatică.

Să ne rugăm pentru pasiunea de a duce Evanghelia fiecărui om. Să oferim o Biblie, un Nou Testament, o broșură, un link cu o predică, devoțional, cântare…

Friday, June 20, 2025 – Jonah 3:1–10

Chapter 3 describes Jonah’s recommissioning for his mission and the surprising reaction of the Ninevites, who respond with repentance and humility to God’s call.

Jonah traveled the approximately 900 kilometers to Nineveh. The capital of Assyria is called “that great city” three times (1:2, 3:2, 4:11) and once “a very large city” (3:3). The circumference of the city’s outer wall was approximately 13 km.

God gave a second chance to the disobedient prophet—and also to the 120,000 citizens of the Assyrian capital (4:11).

It is worth noting that God no longer repeated the reason Jonah had to go to Nineveh. This time, “Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh.” (v. 3a, NIV)

To better understand the structure of the chapter, we will divide it into a few sections:

1. Jonah is sent again to Nineveh (vv. 1–2)
“Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time…” (v. 1, NIV)
God does not give up on His servants or His plans for them.

2. Jonah preaches to Nineveh (vv. 3–4)
“Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” (v. 4b, NIV)
God honors ministry done with obedience and responsibility.

3. The repentance of the Ninevites (vv. 5–9)
“The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.” (v. 5, NIV)
In a completely unexpected turn, the Ninevites and their king repented, prayed, turned from their sinful behavior, and proclaimed a fast to humble themselves before the Lord.

4. God is merciful and forgives those who regret their sins (v. 10)
“When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.” (v. 10, NIV)
True faith and repentance lead to changed behavior and life principles.

From the message of this chapter, we understand that salvation is not only for Israel but for all peoples on the face of the earth.

Nineveh in Jonah’s time had one hundred twenty thousand inhabitants—today the world has eight billion people.

When the prophet refused to evangelize the Ninevites, God became angry with him and involved him in a dramatic experience.

Let us pray for the passion to bring the Gospel to every person. Let us offer a Bible, a New Testament, a pamphlet, a link to a sermon, a devotional, a worship song…
