Matei 23 este capitolul celor “opt vaiuri”, capitolul avertizărilor, mustrărilor, judecăților și condamnărilor. Toate acestea sunt la modul general adresate poporului, însă în mod special sunt adresate fariseilor și cărturarilor pentru ipocrizia lor, pentru abuzul de autoritate și formalism.

Discursul a avut loc în Templul din Ierusalim, în fața mulțimii și a ucenicilor.

Mântuitorul a respectat Legea, însă a condamnat ipocrizia celor care o predicau fără s-o împlinească sau o împlineau cu mândrie și falsă spiritualitate.

Capitolul de față poate fi împărțit în câteva secțiuni:

1.     Avertismentul împotriva fățărniciei religioase (vers. 1–12)
Mântuitorul le cere ucenicilor să respecte Legea, dar să nu imite comportamentul fariseilor:
„Faceți ce vă spun, dar nu faceți ce fac ei.” (vers. 3)

2.     Cele șapte vaiuri împotriva fariseilor și cărturarilor (vers. 13–36)
(a) „Vai de voi, cărturari și farisei fățarnici, pentru că voi închideți oamenilor Împărăția cerurilor…” (vers. 13)
(b) „Vai de voi… pentru că voi mâncați casele văduvelor și, de ochii lumii, faceți rugăciuni lungi…” (vers. 14)
(c) „Vai de voi… pentru că înconjurați marea și uscatul ca să faceți un prozelit…” (vers. 15)
(d) „Vai de voi… povățuitori orbi, care ziceți: Dacă jură cineva pe Templu, nu înseamnă nimic…” (vers. 16–22)
(e) „Vai de voi… pentru că dați zeciuială din izmă, mărar și chimen și lăsați nefăcute lucrurile mai însemnate…” (vers. 23–24)
(f) „Vai de voi… pentru că voi curățați partea de afară a paharului și a blidului…” (vers. 25–26)
(g) „Vai de voi… morminte văruite, care pe dinafară se arată frumoase, iar pe dinăuntru sunt pline de oasele morților…” (vers. 27–28)
(h) „Vai de voi… pentru că zidiți mormintele prorocilor…” (vers. 29–36)

Domnul a rostit aceste mustrări împotriva fariseilor din următoarele motive:

·       Închiderea Împărăției cerurilor (vers. 13)

·       Rugăciuni lungi și exploatarea văduvelor (vers. 14)

·       Convertiri false (vers. 15)

·       Jurăminte ipocrite (vers. 16–22)

·       Legalism fără milă (vers. 23–24)

·       Curățenie exterioară, dar murdărie interioară (vers. 25–28)

·       Omorârea profeților și împietrirea inimii (vers. 29–36)

„Ați lăsat nefăcute cele mai însemnate lucruri din Lege: dreptatea, mila și credincioșia.” (vers. 23)

3.     Plângerea lui Isus pentru Ierusalim (vers. 37–39)
„De câte ori am vrut să adun copiii tăi… și n-ați vrut!” (vers. 37)

Mântuitorul și-a exprimat durerea pentru respingerea continuă a profeților și a harului divin: „Iată că vi se lasă casa pustie” (vers. 38)

Casa lor (Templul) va rămâne pustie, prevestind distrugerea Ierusalimului în anul 70 d.Hr.

Să ne rugăm lui Dumnezeu să fim slujitori, nu stăpâni, pentru că adevărata autoritate vine din smerenie. Să ne ferim cu toată puterea de formalismul religios lipsit de transformarea lăuntrică.

Matthew 23 is the chapter of the “eight woes,” the chapter of warnings, rebukes, judgments, and condemnations. All of these are generally addressed to the people, but especially to the Pharisees and teachers of the law for their hypocrisy, abuse of authority, and formalism.

The discourse took place in the Temple in Jerusalem, before the crowds and the disciples.

The Savior respected the Law, but condemned the hypocrisy of those who preached it without living it, or practiced it with pride and false spirituality.

This chapter can be divided into several sections:

1. Warning against religious hypocrisy (vv. 1–12)
The Savior told the disciples to respect the Law but not to imitate the behavior of the Pharisees:
“So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.” (v. 3)

2. The seven woes against the Pharisees and teachers of the law (vv. 13–36)
(a) “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces…” (v. 13)
(b) “Woe to you… You devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers…” (v. 14)
(c) “Woe to you… You travel over land and sea to win a single convert…” (v. 15)
(d) “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing’…” (vv. 16–22)
(e) “Woe to you… You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law…” (vv. 23–24)
(f) “Woe to you… You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence…” (vv. 25–26)
(g) “Woe to you… You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead…” (vv. 27–28)
(h) “Woe to you… You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous…” (vv. 29–36)

Jesus pronounced these rebukes against the Pharisees for the following reasons:

·       Shutting the kingdom of heaven (v. 13)

·       Long prayers and exploitation of widows (v. 14)

·       False conversions (v. 15)

·       Hypocritical oaths (vv. 16–22)

·       Merciless legalism (vv. 23–24)

·       Outer cleanliness but inner corruption (vv. 25–28)

·       Killing the prophets and hardening their hearts (vv. 29–36)

“But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.” (v. 23)

3. Jesus’ lament over Jerusalem (vv. 37–39)
“How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” (v. 37)

The Savior expressed His sorrow for their continual rejection of the prophets and of divine grace: “Look, your house is left to you desolate.” (v. 38)

Their house (the Temple) would be left desolate, foreshadowing the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70.

Let us pray to God that we may be servants, not masters, for true authority comes from humility. Let us stay far away from religious formalism that lacks inner transformation.
